I always liked the back story of the githzerai and githyanki, even before Dragon magazine released those awesome supplements. And I've also loved the idea of the thri-kreen as a PC race - humanoid praying mantises.

My friend once played a thrikreen in a campaign and it was a nightmare. I can't remember why but I remember it was. Lol
As far as coolest looking race, if we are talking "Any" race I'd have to say Beholder. Plus a definite staple in DnD.
