Though I use neither, it stands to reason that you shouldn't have one without the other imho.
What is your favourite character class?

New versions are as inevitable as night following day (at least for the next few billion years here on Earth) but as far as I am concerned it doesn't matter what edition you play as long you enjoy it. I am sure that all editions have their pros and cons. Anyway there's no chance of me finding anyone who'd try a newer edition these days, I found that out when I tried 3.5. I'm afraid all of my mates are old and stuck in their ways.

I hate to say it, but I hope 5E is the failure I expect it to be & Hasbro throws in the towel. It's sad to see what's become of a once-great franchise.
Pathfinder (an evolution of 3.5) has been the top-selling RPG for several quarters now, and deservedly so. Their core rule-books are rich & high-quality, and their angle on the game is classic fantasy. Their "Golarion" world, modules & adventure paths (whose summaries I read in a weekly newsletter from Paizo) show vastly more imagination than anyone at Wizards can muster. (4E spin-offs of The Keep on the Borderlands & Tomb of Horrors.... Really?? Imaginatively bankrupt much? Meanwhile, the world of the Pathfinders is providing inspiration for novelists and even a new series of comic books.)
Anyway, AD&D, warts and all, was "official" for over a decade - likewise for 2nd ed. Nothing since has made it 5 years before getting replaced and the ensuing "edition wars" has divided the community (players & vendors both) that is the life-blood of the game.
So of course, I think that another edition only adds to the problem. I reckon the up-side is that there will be a mass exodus, as many people will here opt to get off the roller-coaster, and Paizo will enjoy even greater conversions over the next few years. In fact, the timing of this couldn't be better for Paizo. D&D goes into total upheaval mode just after PFRPG gets enough momentum to pass them in the marketplace. Should be interesting anyway...

Mike you keep saying how good Pathfinder is so I reckon I'll have to get hold of the books even if I never get round to playing it.

Wow just looked on Amazon and Ebay - the books aren't cheap!! I might wait a while before buying.
They aren't cheap, but they are nice... And hey, the Core Rulebook is a beautiful monster of a book that = DM's Guide + Players Handbook in one volume. :D
Anyway, you can get background here for free: http://paizo.com/pathfinder
Also, you can get .PDF versions of the books relatively cheap, if that won't drive you insane... But just check out the page samples and video here, for instance: http://paizo.com/products/btpy88yj?Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Core-Rulebook
It's quality stuff.
I forgot about crit fumbles! yes we used them to offset the crit hits. it does add flavor to combat :D cant wait for a new edition i didnt like 4.0 at all. i think 3.5 is the best so far. i like the fewer saving throws there were to many in 2nd ed. also thac0 was a pain in the butt and didnt allow for epic expansion (ie no armor class better than -10 kind of silly isnt it?!). although i do miss the ravenloft and darksun expansion for 2nd ed. we modified alot of it to fit into 3/3.5 mechanics for the ultimate fun time!
