What were your most feared D&D monsters and why?

Ok I know the list is probably endless but I'll start us off.

Most undead creatures were to be feared due to the possibility of being level drained. I used to hate shambling mounds too as they were immune to most magic and if they hit you with both appendages then you were smothered in 2 - 8 rounds unless it was killed. I mean, the things were immune to fire, lightning caused it to grow and cold was at most half damage and how many people actually had things like Plant Control? Oh and if I remember rightly all weapons did half damage too! Where's the weedkiller...............

I hated Cockatrice too as although they didn't do much damage there was always that fear of failing your saving throw and being turned to stone.

... always bad news - especially when they hunted in pairs (or more).

Actually, I often found NPCs to be better at conjuring up fear/loathing than the beasties - especially where the relationship between the NPC nemesis and PCs had time to mature over the course of a campaign.

illithids ate my brain too many times to count...i hate em...demiliches and dracoliches well ANYTHING with "lich" in its name sucked...

glafnazur139

And they say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - not when you're playing D&D!

Hey Jess roll for surprise!!

AHHHH i rolled a 1 !!!! (dwarven bard runs i fear)

ArchBadger

ghosts are awful, if your DM throws thirty of them at you, even at lvl 14 chances of survival are very bad. For bosses, Orcus was just bad.

jpd303

draco-liches...anything with "lich" in its name is bad for your health

glafnazur139

Yep I agree ghosts are pretty bad. I played a high level elven magic user who was adventuring in the Abyss and I came up against the legendary lich, Vecna. He'd been hassling the party for a while (I was with a Paladin and his henchman but I can't remember why we were down there) and I said we'd got to sort him out but the paladin said no so in the end I got fed up and I went on my own. Anyway to cut a long story short, I met Vecna and we exchanged spells and I managed to get the initiative and cast a Power Word Kill and it got through his magic resistance and I killed him on his own plane of existence. I got well over half a million experience points and best of all I got his spellbook. I can remember continually referring to Orcus as 'The Obese Fool' in that adventure.

ArchBadger

hm, does power word kill work on undead?

glafnazur139

Well in the AD&D first edition handbook it states that it affects 'creatures' and neither in that or the DMG does it state that undead are immune to its affect so I see no reason why it should not work. After all when you destroy undead by other means then you 'kill' them, you don't say that they are now unalive!

jpd303

good ruling on the dm's part...if its not specifically worded then the DM's decision is final. i hate when players argue with me over wording or maechanics...im the DM this is my world stop arguing or die...your still talking...roll a saving throw vs DM DEATH POWER! ooooooh sorry your dead....now you cant talk cause YOUR DEAD...hush now before i rip up your character sheet too...i might be nice and let you keep that vorpal sword +5 that I GAVE YOU...thats better, good player...know your place and when you DM you can make rulings on mechanics and wording until then keep your dice warm and your mouth shut. sorry for the venting but its an old wound that just got reopened...

glafnazur139

Here's one just for you Jess

jpd303

i see a big blank square buddy

glafnazur139

can you see it now Jess?

jpd303

AHHHHH! yea thanks...thats horrific...

glafnazur139

I just wanted to bring back all those memories............

CaptainPike

Beholders. Without a doubt. What other creature do you have to save v. spell multiple times every frikkin round!? Better kill that thing quit; laws of averages says you are going to eventually fail a save!

glafnazur139

I've been fortunate enough to have managed to kill these suckers quick in all of my encounters before they've done too much damage!

TheBlueKnight9

Hell hounds............When 15 are thrown at you........

TheBlueKnight9

On the other hand, ghosts..........................
