I wouldn't change any of the rules. If you don't like the way chess is then all you simply have to do is create and play a new variant.

There's been considerations about making castling illegal, people like Kramnik say it would make the game sharper and more interesting, especially at the top level.
That being said, I don't really think chess needs a change

It's been refined over centuries to what it is. A sudden change would probably lose something important to the game
