In 1963 Tigran Petrosian unseated Mikhail Botvinnik as world champion for the final time. Petrosian was a defensive genius and held his title again in 1966 against Boris Spassky. In 1969 Spassky won another candidates cycle and defeated Petrosian to take the title.

In 1963 Botvinnik defended his title for the final time against Tigran Petrosian. Afterward, Botvinnik said that he had difficulty predicting Petrosian's moves.

In 1966 Boris Spassky earned a match against Petrosian. Spassky was widely considered a favorite, but Petrosian won several amazing games and retained his title 12.5-11.5.

Spassky fought back after his loss in 1966 and earned another shot at the title in 1969. This time he didn't underestimate Petrosian and won the title 12.5-10.5 , becoming the 10th World Champion!
