Chess Up 2 board I coming out!

Oh, OK @Rsava, sorry, I didn't see him take it back and move a different piece.

But, no, I didn't back it. Almost did though because I like it. But I've watched these newer electronic boards come to market and haven't seen any without some growing pains. Whether delays, bugs, connection issues, site compatibility, surprise membership fees, limited functionality, or apps for certain OSs ... I guess I'll just wait and see how it develops. I really like how this particular board works though.

Rsava

Oh, he did not move a different piece but his statement about not taking his hand off the piece is the issue.

But enough of him.

Yes, having most of the e-boards, there are definitely growing pains. The new Chessnut "Beta" app (Android only and on the Evo) is not good. Thankfully we have the Chessconnect extension to play games with the boards. The "surprise membership fees" is for the board (I think) that I consider the worst of the bunch. To tack on that membership thing is just a joke. And I have 2 of them.

Site compatibility is really just here are chess[]com, Lichess has no real compatibility issues.

I am guessing (hoping?) that Chessup learned from the first one about bringing things to market and those lessons are being applied to this project. But it is Kickstarter (not sure why since they partnered with chess[]com) and that is always the risk.

This was the first video that I stumbled upon on YouTube that featured the ChessUp 2 in real life.
At least we have a better idea of the actual size of the board and its pieces as well as its screen.
Less than four days remaining for the Kickstarter campaign!

Rsava

Yeah, but not truly a "real life" video as it states at the beginning "Includes paid promotion".

Would like to see Al Su, katzenpapa, or vitualis do one.

The pieces look like the same ones for the Chessup 1.

Mando

he he he…

tychay

You mean same in style/size? The pieces can't be the EXACT same because the 2 is supposed to have piece ID.

I immediately noticed the "touch sense" stuff because I've lost a bunch of games on the Chessnut due to either: opening process issue: (black, 1. d4, ChessConnect disconnects on game start, I queue in 1…Nf6, I reconnect Chessnut (while white is moving). Chessnut moves me 2…Ng8); or sometimes I don't slide a piece fast enough (for my settings) or I adjust a piece the wrong way (like knocking a piece over just so and uprightimg it), such that it sends in a move that was unintentional.

Not a big deal, just growing pains and small tweaks of habit. Ironically, I think the nicest thing for me personally about a ChessUp 2 would be the whole squares lighting up. Right now my custom modified Chessnut pieces are a little oversized so I have to look closely at a lot of squares to see the tiny LEDs showing me which piece I didnt place right. I don't own the Evo like you.

Still as long as we're not comparing this to the Evo (which costs quite a bit more and I passed on because it looked bulky) which can do things that ChessUp 2 will never do (like Chess360), it's apples-oranges to compare the ChessUp 2 with my Air+.

Wouldn't be interesting in modding pieces for the ChessUp 2 even if they make the sensors available because of the piece and board design.

Rsava

Of course they can't be the same. And i would have no way of knowing that they are the same pieces just by watching a video.

I said they LOOK like the same pieces.

I had two red T-Birds in the 90's that looked identical. Same body style, same color, same exterior accessories.

One had electric seats, a turbocharged engine, digital dash. The other did not.

They LOOKED the same in pictures but they were not the same cars under the car body.

Kickstarter campaign is over. Now the wait begins.

TundraMike

No Bluetooth, looks like a winner, we shall see in December.

JBabkes

I am looking forward to trying the board out when it arrives in the Fall.

Pity it isn't tournament sized pieces and board.

I think that would be:

a) much more expensive to produce/sell

and

b) not really fit the niche it is trying to get, the player who wants to play online and have an easily moveable setup.

The Chessnut Pro is tournament size, and works well. But not very easy to move to another room while playing.

Mando

I literally have been looking for this forum for forever…..I started it and couldn’t find it! You guys have talked a lot! That’s great!

Mando

Also, I got the board for $180 because before the kickstarter started you could buy the new chessup2 board of the chessup2.com. It was $20 less than what it was on kickstarter.

JBabkes

since 2000 no manufacturer has worked with a chess playing site to offer a direct stable connection between board and site. The chessup2 is the first product in 24 years that holds that promise. Fingers crossed that it is a success.

TundraMike

Just missed it by 5 minutes yesterday. I will now have to wait for the end of November to see if they will discount it again by $100. I really like it since it does not use Bluetooth.

Rsava
@JBabkes - kind of misleading to state that. Others have tried, someone did not want to work with them.
My guess is Chessup finally offered enough $$$.
JBabkes

Rsava it is not misleading to state that no chess playing site since 2000 worked with an electronic board manufacturer to achieve a direct stable connection. It is in truth what has happened until now. The fact that some companies wanted to work with chess playing sites who did not reciprocate doesn't change the history I am referring to . Wanting a direct link and achieving it notwithstanding

Rsava

It is misleading, lots of companies approached chess[]com to do it, your post makes it seem like no on has tried to get a board working with chess[]com or any other chess site.

They have tried, someone has denied them the resources to do it.

You stated "no manufacturer has worked with". a much better statement would be "No manufacturer has been allowed to work with a chess site despite attempts in the past".

Plenty have tried.

So, I stand by my assertion that your post is misleading.

JBabkes

I look at the situation from the prospective of the purchaser of an electronic board. If I cannot rely upon a 100% stable direct link between a site and the board, it does not emotionally satisfy me that manufactures tried in good faith to offer one but were not able to.
