Confused about quality

Hi! First time posting on the forum.
I’ve found this chess set - http://chessgamesshop.com/mobile.php?c=50&p=939 and I am quite confused about its price. It seems too cheap. Am I missing something here? Where’s the catch?

it has plastic pieces, prob why, could be a scam, idk, but its not really cheap

chess boards arent hundred dollar things, mine is only 15

Well, maybe I’ve just gotten used to the fact that any decent chess board I try to find now, does actually go in the hundreds.
In the pictures this looks like what I kind of had in mind. I am in a sort of situation where at the moment I care more about the board than the pieces.
The cheapest folding boards who are not the box type and don’t come with pieces and are also 20” still cost 20€ more than this one

dont get folding boards, get stuff like mousepad boards and silicone ones if you actually plan on playing

wooden boards are not that functional, the average chess player doesnt use them, just for casual board gaming

expensive boards are colection boards

thinner boards the better btw

Why exactly would you suggest not getting a wooden board?

I myself am a bit conflicted when it comes to choosing a board.

I kind of prefer the look of a wooden board and I haven't had experience with mousepad or silicone boards, so my mind assumes that eventually there would be problems with creases or the board not rolling out completely flat.

I like the convenience of a box board because then you can store the pieces inside as well and probably more often than not I would get a chance to play with someone in person if I meet up with them and take the set with me, so convenience would be a part of it.

But I am interested in knowing your arguments for not getting a wooden board.

I have a nice wooden folding chess set but I dont use it as much as this one. The chess pieces are plastic single weight 900g and the mat is silicone. Only cost £20 in total and I love it.

The reason I use my plastic set more is I worry my wooden one would get damaged. I can leave my plastic set anywhere and it's super easy to transport. The silicone mat you can fold and just chuck in your bag. The pieces just stuffed into a pull string bag.

Avatar of AndrejsBrivulis

Are the pieces still somewhat easy to slide on a silicone mat?

Or would a mousepad board be better if I don't want it to be as grippy?

I don't slide my pieces so doesn't bother me.

Mousepad board is better if you want to slide your pieces.

After having tried vinyl and silicone many people have come to prefer the (thin) mousepad boards.  No problems with them, even if bunched up and stuffed in a bag.

chessgamesshop.com isn't a scam. Bought a few items from them and they have always delivered. The reason it is cheap is because they are plastic. I have the same plastic Dubrovnik set.

I added the opposite colors on the Queen's Crown to show that it is the Queen. Had a few of my friends from chess club say that the King and Queen look too similar. So that's the reason you see paint on the Queens.

weighted pieces help the un even rolling and most boards come with a roll up bag which you dump your pieces in, thicker boards seem more clumsy to me and weird, i like thinner ones because they seem more tidy and neat, mousepad boards and etc do only work on table tops but wooden ones are like smaller and arent that good for analysis and tournaments, im coming from a competetive point of view here

Buying direct from that site would be fine if the site had an updated/legit SSL certificate and offered to buyers to use PayPal.
