Anand Interview and the opening battle

I just watched this interview with Anand and how he is preparing.  I think Carlsen may be underestimating the difference between match and tournament play.

Anand will be able to focus on Carlsen's openings in depth, much more than one would going into a tournament.  Since most people think that phase of the game (opening prep) is in Anand's favor, it seems the match setting will just extend that advantage.  In the matches I have seen it seems the players typically go several more moves before they are out of book as compared to tournaments.

Somehow I just have a feeling Anand will have an advantage out of just about every opening with white and will be able to steer the opening in his favor with black.   Carlsen never had anyone who really drilled down on his opening repetoire like Anand and his seconds will.

Does anyone even know who Carlsen's seconds are?   Are they Fressinet and Jon Ludvig Hammer?

Who do you think will win the opening battles?  How much of an impact do you think that will have on the match?

I think Carlsen will win the opening battle most of the times because :

  • his repertoire is extremely wide, so I don't think Anand can find ideas everywhere
  • Carlsen doesn't need any += position to play for a win : he just needs to keep some pieces on

I think Anand will try to sharpen the openings as much as possible, hoping to get some concession from Carlsen.

Thanks for the input.  I was actually not following chess closely for a few years so I wasn't really too sure about Carlsen's opening repertoire.  But wow I just looked at his chess on chessgames.com:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=52948

And on the first page i see  with black he is playing the dragon, 2 knights, french, pirc, kings indian, queens pawn game, Najdorf, petrov, three knights, Sicilian Alapin, and benoni and English symetric.  Thats out of only 15 black games on the first page.  Chessgames gives more statistics with what opening he plays but like you said he does have a wide variety of openings.  I wonder if he will really focus on a few for this match.

So you actually think Carlsen will do well in the opening battle most times.  And you give good reasons.   I am sure Anand and his team are working out ways to try to force him down certain lines.  It should be very interesting.

Here is an article on Carlsen's openings that reinforces what hicetnunc said.  I still wonder how well this will work in a match against a really strong player like Anand though.
