Did anyone mention Duchamp? He was an artist that actually quit art to do chess. He played in several Olympiads, although he was never among the best in the world (his country, France, maybe).

I've been collecting names of famous people and celebrities for over 40 years, and the lists have been published in many sources.  Maurice Ashley used my list in his chapter on celebrities in his book Chess for Success.  Here is an alphabetical list (and reference) of 1192 famous people who play(ed) chess.  If you have other celebrities or famous people not on this list who play chess (with a good reference), let me know and I will add it to the list.

Napolean was kinda famous, too.

Yes, but he was a lousy player. (He didn't do too well at Waterloo, either.)

The English Defense finished him.  He should have stayed with the Austrian Attack and the Italian Game.  The Russian Game hurt him a lot, too.

Film director Stanley Kubrick (DR. STRANGELOVE, 2001, THE KILLING) was an expert who supported himself as a chess hustler before making his name in movies.

I wonder why apparently there are no games between him and Nabokov, who collaborated in the film about his novel "Lolita".

No , I was asking about your reference to inmates on Lockup, friend?

Avatar of Senior-Lazarus_Long

Right, that's the answer. Lockup inmates on TV are minor celebraties.

I started a thread about Ray Charles some years ago. He was a decent B/A class-player.
