Will Anand Consider Retirement?

Anand loses the title match against Carlsen 4.5-6.5.

Over the two matches, Anand has scored one win in twenty-one attempts.

Perhaps it's time for Anand to consider retirement, he's done it all and surely other interests beckon.

Few neutrals would want to see Carlsen - Anand III.

In the post game interview he gives an emphatic "no".

I can't imagine what he has left to play for, one win in twenty-one is never going to regain the title. It's over for him now, in terms of WC titles. There's another generation pushing up from behind.

Korchnoi continued playing even when he had no chance at the title!

Chess isn't all about the most prestigious titles. Anand can still keep playing for the money/fun/world senior championship...

It's all true. Some play on, some don't.

Fischer gave up, as did Kasparov.

For some, not playing for the top prize is a huge disincentive.

He got the question if he will withdraw from chess on the press conference after today's match. He instantly answered "No!" -- and was met by a spontaneous applause from the audience :-)

Come on... why should he retire? He is/was still strong enough to qualify for the WC-match. Do you guys retire after not winning a tournament?

Why would almost 2800 ELO supergrandmaster consider retirement?

Of course! It's very logical that any chess player who loses against the World Champion should consider retirement. Wink

He lost two in a row, scoring one win in twenty-one attempts.

Who do you think will sponsor Carlsen/Anand III? they struggled for a sponsor this time.

Why didnt Karpov retire after he kept failing to beat Kasparov ?   Undecided

As I said, some do, some don't.

I mean, it's no problem if Anand keeps playing, the problem arises if he becomes the next challenger. Surely no-one wants to see another boring match, with a foregone conclusion?

He said, "no".

Press conference: first question.

I would not want to see a 3rd match between these two players and I doubt they will find sponsorship for a third one .  Its silly though to suggest Anand retires because he is no longer world champ or unable to defeat Carlsen in a match . He is still one of the elite players in the world and will probably be competitive at the top for at least a few more years ...

I fail to see the problem. If Aronian, Caruana etc. can’t even beat (then) 46 year old Anand, how will they be able to beat Carlsen?

Well, Kasparov retired when he was 41 and he probably could have won a lot of more major tournaments but still Anand is fighting! I definitely think Anand will be able to win some more tournaments, after all he won bilbao masters this year. But I certainly do not hope we will see Anand-Carlsen III, it would be very boring to watch!

Was Sochi 2014 "boring" compared to Chennai 2013?

Avatar of Doggy_Style

Well done Carlsen, he beat what was put in front of him. Smile

Anand should not participate in the next candidates. Probably too old then aswell.

But: Norway now has the champion for the next two years. Hurray!

The next WC is in 2016 ?  I wouldnt mind seeing a WC match every 2 years .  Its better than every 3 years like in Fischer's time and having one every year is too often  imo .

I think Carlsen should retire and become an actor. Maybe the next 007.

Could stop him falling asleep at the wheel.
