I agree. The Champ should have the opportunity to pursue tournament domination of his peers.

Anand is still easily one of the strongest players in the world.  He can still win lots of events, even if they're not the WC.  Besides, this is his job and how he makes a living, not to mention his passion.

I'd settle for him not playing the candidates again.

He should be banned from future Candidates, unless Carlsen gets kidnapped or goes to Hollywood.

I'd love a paperback on this world championship match, with a picture of Carlsen nodding off on the cover.

The King is dead! Long live the King!

I hope Anand continues playing as Korchnoi did, he was an inspiration for us older Geezers.

This question deserves a big laugh. How many GMs in the top 20 would have showed better than Anand? Should the rest of them also consider retirement? The Title of WCC is not the only Tournament in chess. Anand is still one one the strongest chess players on this Planet, and I am sure, has a good few years left in the tank. I can't see anyone taking over Thor's hammer for the next 10-15 years.

Who do you think will sponsor Carlsen/Anand III? they struggled for a sponsor this time.

I want to see Anand versus the World champ as long as he is the most qualified challenger.  The problem is do we really think a round robin tournament is the best way to choose a challenger?

IMO the answer is pretty clearly no.  That is not to say Anand was not the best challenger for Carlsen.  He might be.  We just don't have a system that decides that right now so we can only speculate.  There should be a series of matches at least 10-12 games long to decide this issue.  That would make things much more interesting.  No blitz or rapid games thank you very much.

Unfortunately Kirsan has tried to degrade the world championship title ever since Kasparov and Short used the influence the then decent system had, to break away.  Since then Kirsan has had no interest in having a system that really decides the best chess player.

In short the Chess world is much better off if Anand keeps playing the problem is the silly qualifier.

The problem is: Without Fischer all WC-matches will - by definition - be kinda boring. Tongue Out

If Anand qualifies again, I would be happy to see Carlsen-Anand III. If Anand wins another Candidates tournament, it won't be a fluke. He played much better this year, an assessment that Carlsen agreed with. I think that those who hope for a more "exciting" WCC will be disappointed every year no matter what. There will always be too many draws, not enough sacs, not enough decisive kingside attacks, etc. This year featured much more exciting chess than in Chennai. I look forward to seeing what Vishy does in the coming tournaments after this.

Everybody likes Caruana because of his superb showing at the Sinquefeld Cup, and because he is young and therefore exciting, but it is not altogether clear that he would have given a better showing than Anand. At that event in St. Louis of all places, Carlsen was quoted as not being worried about Caruana's play. He was in good form, but he's not a better player than Carlsen. And of course words often don't mean much, but I take Carlsen to be a fairly frank person who tends to be honest about his evaluations of his own and other's play.

No, Anand should definitely retire from the championship race

I'm not saying its a fluke that he won the tournament.  I correctly predicted he would win the candidates tournament.

The problem is relying on a single tournament delivers a relatively random challenger.  No player can control the results of games they are not even playing.  Yet those games they are not even playing have a huge impact on whether they can win the tournament.

Devil-sPawn

That would depend on his retirement pot and /or state pension pay out amounts

Anand loses the title match against Carlsen 4.5-6.5.

Over the two matches, Anand has scored one win in twenty-one attempts.

Perhaps it's time for Anand to consider retirement, he's done it all and surely other interests beckon.

Few neutrals would want to see Carlsen - Anand III.

You don't have to be world champion to play chess. Should Kramnik, Short, Etc retire??

MuhammadAreez10

Anand is not going to retire. Period.

He'll retire. Maybe when he's 65. Maybe before, but no time soon.

CrazyJae

Dude, he just made a fortune losing a game. Two options, retire or don't. Either way he's not gonna go hungry unless somehow he blows all of it.

ChessBooster

he should not retire, after all, he gaind all he could, all is still left is to travel all round the globe and just enjoy playing without pressures for the rest of life
