Nonononono, that’s a THERIAN. They’re the ones that actually believe they’re animals and act like animals. Furries are just animal cosplayers, same as renaissance fair goers or anime conventioneers et cetera.
As for do therians have a mental illness? I certainly believe so, but my personal belief on the matter delves deep into topics ranging from the philosophical to the sociological to the spiritual, so I’ll spare you all of that and give you the short version. Many unpopular teenagers develop self-esteem issues. So the thought process goes like this. if the person I CURRENTLY am isn’t good enough, maybe this OTHER thing will make me feel better about myself. Animals are cool. Give or take half a decade of that floating around your subconscious and other mental illness caused by social media and social awkwardness, and you’ve got yourself a therian.
