I started playing chess at 18. Is it too late for me to become world chess champion?

There are, what, 7 or 8 billion people on the planet? In your lifetime there will only be a handful of world chess champions. Regardless of when you start training your chess, I think you can do the math.

And, of course, the perfect response to my post would be, "So you're saying there's a chance?" ;-)

I mean, there might be a terrorist attack in Wijk aan Zee this week, but that aside....

@Strangemover - Here’s  the player who represented the Elite Club in Daily Chess matches. One player so- called Team matches... him with his 2000+ rating playing opponents with ratings below 1000.
Respectful? Sporting? Ethical? Hardly. The poor behavior never ends does it ?

In 1994, Donald Trump met grandmaster Pal Benko at the World Championship Candidates matches at Trump Tower and asked Benko, "Don't you think I could also be a grandmaster if I put in one or two years of chess?" Benko replied, "You need to be born again. I have never known anyone who started with chess after the age of 20 and became a grandmaster." (source: Pal Benko, ChessBase Chess News, Jan 23, 2017)

See! Easier to become president.

That’s the same thing I was thinking of, but I couldn’t remember the exact story. Thanks!

What are you babbling about now...? I can count on the fingers of 1 hand the times I have played vs someone rated under 1000, and only then in open tournaments. Anyway, I've seen you throw the same accusation at somebody else in another thread, almost word for word in fact. Such poor behaviour of mine littering this site...the difference between me and you is that I will make genuine efforts to help and advise new/beginner players (when they ask a genuine question unlike in this thread) whereas all you are here to do is maintain this persona whereby you are the arbiter of etiquette, the moral guardian of chess.com. That and recounting the jolly times you spent in the skittles room at tournaments with Dzindzichashvili which never happened.

Your Daily history is an open book. The dozens of so- called Team matches vs players under 1000 is a matter of record. You can’t hide from the actions.

StormCentre3

Yep. I had the pleasure of playing Dzin many games. Every penny I lost was well worth it !

This whole forum is so devoid of hope. It stinks. To answer your question, depends on if you really want to. And if you are willing to dedicate yourself to the game. Its a question you must ask yourself not bunch of chess snob who themselves haven't achieved their goals. Op, if you want it bad enough, you can get it

Yes it is. Please link some games to validate your claim.

Of course it is possible. you can be successful in anything with the right amount of passion.

Don't listen to the a-holes saying otherwise, if you put your mind to it of course you can become a world chess champ one day. william Steinitz for example didn't start playing chess competitively until his mid twenties and the dude later went on to be the world champion in his time.

Didn’t Dzin end up as a chess hustler in NY? He’s sort of famous for being a few pawns short of a promotion.

Of course. I myself had the pleasure of analysing with Tony Miles many times in the late 80's. Or am I just inventing BS in a pointless attempt to give myself credibility?

No. A point was made. This is not the place. What is in question is your verbal abuse of the OP. Whether he is trolling or not - you make yourself sole judge and jury and meet out your punishment- by openly mocking and insulting him. Telling us it is your entitlement to do so.
Well several here have expressed disagreement. I brought into question your credibility and the continued poor behavior.

Yes, it's a well-guarded secret that there are millions of world chess champs walking around as we speak! We can all do it!

End of story. Staff will take any action deemed necessary for your blatant verbal abuse.

So you are just going to make an unsubstantiated claim about my 'credibility' and not back it up. Seems reasonable...Yeah I mocked the OP, his question is nonsensical. And the 'continued poor behaviour' you talk about? Non-existent. There are a few posters in the forums who regularly reply to beginners questions in a helpful and instructive manner, I am one of them. I will also play games vs these learners if they want and give advice along the way. So you are some distance wide of the mark in trying to paint me as a bad apple.

Steinitz played in a different era. He was also by far the worst champion ever (if measured by rate of errors) and would be nowhere near the top if he played today. It’s like comparing being the best Fortnite player in the weeks after release vs. now when there are millions of players. The odds are much lower now.

You either have to be extremely unaware of the magnitude of the challenge or suffer from tremendous hubris to believe that you can become world champion starting so late. While “anything is possible” the probability is infinitesimally small—probably smaller than the odds of winning the PowerBall.

Yes they will. I'll pay for a years worth of diamond membership for you if any action is taken.
