and just for the record, I'm not taking hostages, blocking everything, you never know who you are talking with, and not playing blitz either, just in case, you never know with what they can come up with, there's nothing you can do actually, with scam
Is chess.com safe for children?
@Pawn
but all this "hiding" behind a monitor is PART of what makes it safer. yes, strangers might be unpleasant and perhaps deceptive- but for a kid the rule here is simple. don't talk with them.
irl, however pleasant a club environment might be- I would be Very careful about unsupervised access to my kids.
didn't we have a thread about that?
irl is MORE dangerous not less.
All valid points, and it still gets back to the basics. Teach your child, be around your child, guide your child, be the parental filter for your children. My points though was, given the choice between chesskids.com, chess.com, and going to a club.
1. Club
2. chesskids.com
3. chess.com
but from the Vantage point of what you allow and when ... it should surely be
1. games with a parent or within the family
2. games against a chess computer or a low rated computer program (like Titans)
3. chesskids.com
4. chess.com
5. chess in a club with parental supervision
6. touraments with parental supervision. (no helicopter parents though)
7. Unsupervised tournament or club meetings
8. Lastly and most carefully. unsupervised coaching (one on one)
@GPawn. Club meetings are practically dead last meaning only the most serious, experienced and mature kids should be going to any club without parental supervision.
do not confuse Safety with the quality of the experience. yes a Good club might make your kid an enthusiast for life- but without supervision its a heck of a risk.
in that other thread someone trusted a 10 year girl one on one unsupervised coaching. this is ten zillion times riskier than anything that would happen on chess.com.

I am in no way condoning dropping your kid off so you can run errands. I have had parents do that after meeting me once. Needles to say it didnt happen again. I just think the club experience is better than online. We have several kids that show up at the club, and all of the parents are there keeping an eye out. Online chess obviously has its merits, you just have to be careful and so the parental thing online, just as in real life.
ok, Gpawn. I know what you are trying to say.
I just think I needed to make the point for you and others that there is the Danger of getting 'hurt' with words here (or pics I guess- people can post some foul stuff)
and then there is Getting HURT.
by the way, me and my son will be going to Chess club in about an hour. We just started: Its wonderful. I highly recommend it. but I think we did it right and yes with the exception of chess kids my son evolved in his chess from #1 to #5.
hopefully his interest grows to the point at which he will be a willing and happy participant in a tournament... (6)

Good to hear!
so I know I'm hijaking the thread. but rather than talk about how dangerous it is online, isn't it possible that chess.com prepares kids to be more serious "club" players?
The "threat to kids",caused by minors merely being online,is grossly overstated. While the concerns raised by this thread are legitimate, lets keeps things in perspective. The crime data collected and collated by various law enforcement agencies, both local and federal, don't support the exsistance of some vast illuminati-like conspiracy waiting to snatch up children who are foolish enough to venture online. The actual crime data convincingly shows that minors are vastly more likely to come to grief at the hands of their own parents or relatives ,than they are at the hands of faceless online-boogymen.
I don't think anyone is thinking someone will snatch up kids via chess.com badger.... but I do expect, from my own experience that they might well be subjected to an inappropriate level of abuse
I'd rather sit and play chess with my children, teach them to play, show them some ideas and then take them to a kids chess club
