I do nearly every game, but rarely is it reciprocated. Must be something us older players did? I'm 43..

Is it an american thing? Saying insincere things with no meaning? I say well played when I think my opponent has played well. I don´t praise bad play by lying an saying good game. But I am born and raised in Sweden where we usually say what we mean and mean what we say.

It is an American thing and probably British, too, at least among much older people (I'm 69). As children we were rigrorously instructed in sportmanship, where the game and competition are appreciated as much as winning. I realize that these are outmoded concepts, much like holding door open for ladies. Of course now thanking someone for a game is considered a veiled insult. Note that the forum has a facility for telling people 'good game', but it's only been in last 20-30 years people are saying it's not well received and stopped using it. Why do you think it is even a topic of discussion. Apparently many people have found this to be something not to be done anymore. However, your obervation of Americans isn't too far off. Now everybody knows that when Southern ladies say "Bless your heart" they are actually criticising you heavily and they say, "He's a MESS!" they are really saying he's a less than palatable person.

Anyway, the value of sportsmanship and the love of playing and competing are not taught anymore. People are now taught that winning is everything and all and anything outside of that is foolishness at best and taunting your opponent for not having a chance against your superior skill. That was NOT the way we were taught. We were taught that thanking your opponent for a game was good in everybody's interest as well as good for the sport or game.

hey are you mad that you keep losing try keeping yourself happy besides youll get better at chess the more you play

I don’t say good game bc I don’t even know if either of played with accuracy or not and 1in 10000 of opponents are going to wait for you to analyze a game to see a gg in chat
ishaandivekar

Normally people only say gg when they win and that is also a taunt. I once said "gg" to an opponent (genuinely) and he replied "don't tease me".

You must enjoy self abuse.

Likely. Habits from years of playing OTB chess probably. Online, I don't really chat unless my opponent says something first.

Why would they even say that?

As for me, I sometimes say "gg" . Only sometimes, as my mood depends.

RobertSchoolAcc
