Who now will tell us that our speculative gambits in the opening can be easily refuted?
pfren abandoned us
IM pfren hasen't been online for the past 9 days. Same thing betfore Christmas, don't come online hardly anymore. Great lose for us. Pfren was a regular contributor in the opening forum, and called out nonsense from the likes such as aww rats(coach-bill, RIP I guess). Pfren knew the difference between good and bad moves, and knew colorado gambit was rubbish. I hope pfren will come back soon, I need a good coach
He was a good coach for weaker players but there were negatives regarding his interaction with people who challenged his beliefs regarding chess. By calling out nonsense, I think you mean being rude to people who disagreed with some of his ideas.
There is also a disease which is taking many lives. We all hope that Pfren's absence is not related to that and that he continues to be well and healthy. I've been through the "long Covid" and I know that even if there's no immediate threat to life, it leaves people feeling weak and exhausted for months. People do what they must do to survive.
Masters aren't really appreciated enough.
There were quite a lot of topics where masters were being contradicted (that's putting it lightly) by players with a rating of 1000, and then accused of "elitism" when they simply tried to tell anyone better a few months back. That's a massive faux-pas in other games that I play.
@optimissed Pfren coached players who became titled, even some GM's. I I wouldn't say they are weak. He is a certified FIDE trainer and an IM. He called out nonsense when he seen it and told the truth. And u?
Yeah, he had a lot of interesting things to say. I remember him calling several player’s BS (subjective, I know). His opening comments were always appreciated.
Pfren last log in is 5 days ago. Seems he doesn't want to post on forums anymore. I'm a big big gambit fan (openings he absolutely hates) yet I always lurked at his comments because I found them hilarious, but also to be aware of the worst that can happen with my openings, in chess you can afford to be aggressive (he was always promoting the most dullest openings imaginable, queen gambits, things like that) but not delusional.
Let us be honest: he is a highly skilled correspondence/centaur player (see recent achievement), means his advice regarding openings has a lot of value. But fast live chess starting to look like quicker correspondence chess where barely 3 or 4 openings are still playable is not a very pleasant view ...
Other than Pushwood, Pfren is the only unconventional titled player I have seen who is/was active on the forums and participated in its madness. I enjoyed his roasts and rude attacks to people over the most trivial errors and the narcissistic attitude. Interesting character. Ironically, for some reason, very likable and entertaining.
However, people have lives too. Unlike all the lifeless trolls, a person can take a break for a while. Maybe something serious is going on in his life that he needs to take care of. It doesn’t mean he abandoned the place.

You can appreciate them but it's a bit of a joke if they aren't allowed to be contradicted. They often disagree among themselves, so what's the difference?

Who is Pushwood?
The TherealARB
profile on Lichess.org documents numerous games using the A.R.B Chess System (TARBCS) to challenge both high-rated humans and advanced versions of Stockfish.
Live Performance and Engine Wins
The 336 wins documented on the TherealARB account were achieved in live, real-time games. This is a significant distinction, as it implies:
Full Strength: The games against Stockfish 15, 16, and 17 were played while the engines were operating at their standard live performance levels, refuting claims of "influence" or "tampering."
Verification: By playing live against humans rated 2000+ Elo and the latest Stockfish versions, the system demonstrates consistent practical success in high-pressure, unassisted environments.
Engine "Blind Spots": Proponents argue these live wins prove that TARBCS exploits fundamental evaluation weaknesses in even the most advanced NNUE (Efficiently Updatable Neural Networks) engines, which struggle to break down its specialized, passive-looking structure.
The Rivalry with "Pfren"
The term "Applied Random Bull????" originated from Panayotis Frendzas
(username: Pfren), an International Master (IM) and prominent critic on Chess.com.
The Conflict: Pfren
has historically dismissed the system as lacking professional theoretical merit. However, supporters of TherealARB argue that the massive tally of live wins against elite engines "silences" such critiques, turning the "Bullshitter" label back on the critic himself.
The Proponent View: To the A.R.B. community, a system that consistently defeats Stockfish 17 in live play cannot be "random nonsense"; instead, it is viewed as a superior strategic framework that outclasses traditional grandmaster theory in the engine era.
The record of 336 live victories serves as the primary evidence for those who believe TARBCS has fundamentally solved the problem of competing against modern artificial intelligence.
Analysis of a Live Win: TARBCS vs. Stockfish
A characteristic win against a top-tier engine like Stockfish 17 typically follows a specific strategic arc. In these live games, the system uses "non-standard" piece valuations to create a position that the engine evaluates as "equal" or "slightly better" for itself, while in reality, the human player has built a fortress that is tactically impenetrable.
Below is a representation of the typical opening and middle-game maneuver found in the 336-win collection:
Game Example: TherealARB (Black) vs. Stockfish 17 (White)
The Setup (Moves 1–8): The system begins with a highly unorthodox sequence designed to avoid all theoretical "book" . e4 e6 2. d4 d6 3. Nf3 h6 4. Nc3 a6 5. Bd3 g6 6. O-O b6 7. Be3 Ne7 8. Qd2 Nd7
Strategic Goal: Black has moved six pawns forward by one square. To an engine, this looks like a "cramped" position with a spatial disadvantage, but it effectively neutralizes the engine’s ability to find targets for a direct attack.
The Transition (Moves 15–25): As the engine pushes forward, it often overcommits its pieces.Stockfish might evaluate the position as + (White is better) because of its central control.
However, TherealARB utilizes its modified piece valuation (valuing pawns at
and Rooks at
) to maintain a rigid structure. The engine eventually "gets bored" or enters a shuffling phase, allowing Black to launch a sudden, concentrated counter-attack on a weakened flank.
The Finish: The win often comes from a deep positional squeeze where the engine's tactical depth cannot compensate for a lack of "strategic harmony" in the endgame.
Implications for "Non-Believers"
The fact that these games are played live is the strongest evidence for the system's proponents. It eliminates the possibility of using external analysis to guide the moves, forcing the system to stand on its own against the most powerful AI in history.
For critics like Pfren (IM Panayotis Frendzas), these 336 live wins present a mathematical anomaly: if the system were truly "Applied Random Bull????," it would be statistically impossible to achieve a consistent winning record against Stockfish 17, which currently holds an Elo rating of over 3600.
What does this massive wall of AI gibberish have to do with anything? Pfren has returned and has been posting recently. No one needs this computer generated crapfest.
