Yeah a lot of my friends joined after watching it. I Had tried convincing them to play chess and at least try it out once. But they were reluctant and told me that chess is a game that can't be enjoyed and its only for the boring nerds.

Interesting how it works. They were not persuaded by some solid logic but more so by an entertaining show. But hey, at least you could be proud to be ahead of the crowd. happy.png

Let's welcome the newbies to chess.com who joined after getting inspiration from latest Queen's Gambit TV series?

Hi,

I watched Queen's Gambit twice, but did not join chess.com afterwards and then I saw the old movie Searching for Bobby Fisher from 1993 and I thought it would be nice to play chess and then joined chess.com.

As I am retired not needing to chase the burgers anymore, I wanted to do something additional to my other Hobby which is Astronomy doing Photography of Deep Space as well as Sun.

Well, I joined after watching Queens Gambit, because a newspaper review mentioned that they had a Beth Harmon bot. The writer also cautioned against ‘going down the rabbit hole.’

I remembered my dad teaching me chess when I was a kid. He was pretty good at it, and I have since realised he was an appalling teacher. He taught me how to move the pieces... and that’s all. That might have worked if he was like Mr Shaibel to me as Beth Harmon, but I always thought I was useless at the game, and gave up. I think I beat him once, and that was probably because he was not paying attention and reading the newspaper.

Fast forward 40 odd years, and I’m still not very good. But I know a little more about tactics and strategy, opening, middle, end. Mainly due to this site and others. It’s fun, stretches your mind a bit... I’m never going to be a GM, but I’m still enjoying myself!

So thanks you guys... C19 has become bearable because of yez all 😊

II watched the movie twice and loved it and decided to learn chess. It has been fun and often frustrating.

Don't take Beth as an example though. At our age, hungovers can be lethal.

It's rather weird to be honest. I feel they decided to play out the game not because they found it interesting , but because it's in the trend. That's the reality of our generation .
