Why am I so bad?

The bottomline:

The 4 center squares are very important if you want to win a game.

The title of this thread is makes me look like a bad chess player. It should be called "Why am I so bad (at the moment)?"

I think you expect too much too soon.  As you related to us, you are 13 with a lot of studies and little time to concentrate on chess.  Reading and viewing how well others are doing here on chess.com can be intimidating if you let it.  You wouldn't expect to be able to drive in a 500 mile race  soon after you learned to drive, would you?  Lighten up on yourself.  Strive to improve, but don't forget to enjoy the game. Judge your improvements related to your past performances and not someone else's that you admire.

Thanks very much, among all the help I have been given, you have been very helpful indeed.

Thank you for the kind response.

The game you posted above, post #31, confirms what I said in my post #30.

Why 3..e5? develop your pieces and try to control the center.

4.Be2?? better is Bb5 or Nc3.

At move 5 . exd6 you already have no control of the center at all.Natural development moves could be d4 or castle.

6.c3 likely to prevent the black knight to come ion your territory and what will it do without any protection. I see this type of move often but differently by playing a3 or h3 too early in the game when no threats, better is to continue your development. Again Nc3 or d4.

7.a3??

Bottom line is your opponent is developing pieces and absolutely not worried about all your eratic moves without any plan.

What to do?

Well let's be honest here, you have no foundations whatsoever about openings.

You play randomly.

If you want to win at this game you need to understand openings, what and why and when.

My suggestion is try to stick to 2 openings for white 1.d4 and 1.c4, i.e4 is too technical for you and many players actually.

With black respond with he Sicilian 1...c5 to 1.e4 and with 1.d5 , 1..Nf6 is very difficult to play unless you know the lines.

In other words you loose a lot as you do not play chess but roulette at almost every move in the opening. There are quite a few more jewels in your game but sorry I will not post them as it is always the same pattern.

Thanks for your tip on openings. I have played 1.d4 in some recent games and I seem to be doing much better when it comes to the middle game.

Thanks once again!Smile

This has got to be the most motivational thread for amateurs ever. :D I've been playing horribly lately, messing up right from the opening.

Your right! This seems to not only have helped me but others as well! I think this is the motivational thread! In fact, that's given me an idea...

Tips for attacking a castled opponent:

If you are a beginner then you will probably be playing an easier opponent. They will probably follow this fairly closely but it shouldn't stop you if they don't play a very good defending move. But as I said, this is only basic.

If anyone else has any tips they are willing to share then feel free to do so.

Please can you say if you found this helpful. I wouldn't want to do this if no-one cares.

Well here is a game that should make you feel better. An easy win for my opponent turned into a stalemate.

Did you mean to post this?...

..did that really happen?   Laughing

Anyway, hope that helps but if you're having problems posting things like diagrams & games, might be worth reading this..

Just concentrate, check for blunders and use your time well. Learning the opening theory for openings like the Scotch Gambit (where there is little margin for error) also helps.

I (and some others) have posted some advice. It's mostly on page 3 but look back as well.

This is now the motivational thread! If you have been playing badly recently, or are not a very good chess player, then please comment and post some games and (hopefully) the chess community of beginners (and maybe some more people) will help you! Thank you!

(below is the original message when I started this thread)

It seems that recently I have not been playing chess very well(making lots of mistakes, blunders etc.) and I have lost games that I really should have won.

Am I just being careless or does everyone have a spell where their form goes bad?

Thanks,

Henster

I am an absolutely terrible player but I still enjoy the game on occasion especially when I have a winning position or when I have won a closely fought positional battle.

You suck because you are not Kasparov. When you can play like the great Kasparov then you will not suck. Until then you will always suck.

I am fairly new at chess and self taught. I haven't been able to win almost any games, and I have been playing consistently. I am getting frustrated and distracted; I think I rush my moves and don't think them through. I have tried slowing down, but I just have trouble thinking them through. Any advice?
