Why doesn't anybody say "gg" anymore?

Do you remember "gg" or "good game." It used to be something always said after a game, even on the internet. I remember all the old 90's internet sites for chess, playsite, pogo, etc. People always said it after a game, win or lose. Curious why it went away. Also curious (from somebody who's never played in an actual OTB tournament) do people even say it in real life anymore? In all the games I've played here, I've never seen it mentioned. Guess I miss the old days of chivalry.

It is rare. I think it's because it's not clear if it is meant or is sarcastic.

Also, because people leave games immediately.  Half the time I think to say it, my opponent is gone before I can even begin to say it.

I'm going to take this as a PSA to start saying GG more at the end of online matches.

In 30|0 I often say gg, in 5|0 usually not.

I say gg often, but most times my opponent leaves before I get a chance to.

as you said it was back when 90's.. those people are x or y generation. now all around we see z gens.. this is "ok boomer" generation.. who cant read more than a few lines and cant think more than 2 seconds. dont expect much manners. This is the Future!!

I say "gg" when I'm too lazy to type good game, usually after my opponent makes a mess of things. "gg thx" during a game in progress is my observation that a resignation might be in order.

But do you say 'gl' at the start of the game?

That is kinda rude though. They deserve it if they are playing on in crazy dead lost positions, but still...

If I say it with that intent, the position is dead lost (and I usually have a lot more time, too).

In tournaments, especially one where I see the same players week after week, I often say gl hf at the beginning, and gg, thx, well played, or something else at the end. Sometimes we even discuss the game after it ends. I'll also pop over to Twitch, where the event is broadcast, and congratulate a player who beat me.

I'd take "gl" as a negative thing. Since you dont need luck in chess actually. It feels like sarcasm.

canadian_rt

As someone said above previously. People can't tell if you're being sarcastic or mean it. Better to just keep your mouth shut sometimes

LavenderLilac123

like if you beat them big time?

yhwang

i just say gg wipeout

Steven-ODonoghue

I never say gg, unless I'm playing someone I know, and 99% of the time my opponent says gg, they are saying it sarcastically, and usually follow it up with "easy".

I kinda hate when people do that. it may be a me issue, but it annoys me.

It can be. It also can be a genuine greeting that has no real meaning, as is often true of small talk.
