And they're perfect.

The only problem with that set here is the square size is 2.0". Those pieces are too big for the board.

My apologies. I didn't read the entire thread. I did read "I suppose I should be a little more specific. Must be Staunton. Wood. 4" king preferred. Non folding board." My set is 4" king, so I posted it. Though I suppose I didn't consider his Staunton preference to be in stone. When I first set out to purchase pieces, I wanted Staunton pieces. As I shopped around, I began considering all sorts of different kinds of pieces, e.g. Zagreb and Reykjavik.

Turns out I'm going over budget and am going to wait for pieces. I found this board on eBay. He let me get it for 300. I couldn't pass that up, right?
Now I have to figure out what pieces will go best with it

That is certainly a beautiful board.  What is the square size?  I see the "2.0" in the title of the eBay listing, but it is not clear if that refers to the square size. And there is nothing else in the listing describing the square size.

For the purposes of estimating the relative sizes of board square size vs King base diameter, I submit that for a board with 2 inch squares, a King base diameter within the range  1.4 - 1.6 inches would work well.  This results in a square to king base difference (delta) of (2.0 -1.4) to (2.0-1.6) = 0.6 - 0.4 inches ( ~ 15 - 10 mm) .  This also implies a range for the ratio [r] of (King base/square size) = (r1 - r2) = (1.4/2.0 - 1.6/2.0) = 0.7 - 0.8 = ratio range of king base to square size.

The sweet spot of these differences and ranges would be in the middle, i.e., delta_mid = 0.5 inches = difference of square size and king base diameter.  And r_mid = 0.75 = ratio of King base to square size.  Thus the sweet spot King base diameter for a 2 inch square is (0.75 * 2.0) = 1.5 inch King base diameter.

Anything outside of these ranges would be a matter of personal preference.

I assumed that 2.0 referred to square size. Can't think of what else it could be referring to

Second version if the board? You know, Board 2.0, like Web 2.0.

Dizzoballs
Ah, good point! I'll be sure to measure the squares. Thanks:)

So you didn't ask about square size when you purchased the board?  This is important in determining the size of the pieces (King base diameter vs square size) that will work well with the board, as I attempted to explain in my previous comment.

I bring this up because you had originally said that you preferred a 4 inch King height.  There is a range of board square sizes that work well with the pieces.  This is typically judged on the basis of King base diameter.  You don't want squares that are too big or too small compared to the pieces else either things will look too crowded, or the pieces will appear to be "swimming" in the "ocean" of your chess board.  Now the board size will dictate the appropriate size of your pieces instead of the other way around.

Or, you just buy the board then go "Aw, man, my pieces don't fit. Now I have to buy another set to fit the board and another board for these pieces."

And that is how it starts ....

As Tony Montana might say, "Say goodbye to your disposable income ..."

ANOK1

is it possible in your area you have someone skilled in working with wood ? id keep the money local and ask them to create a set of pieces and board ,

you will then have a unique set that has aided a member of your local community

If your board has 2 inch squares, then something like these "Fierce Kinght" pieces, (ebonized boxwood, 3.5 inch king height - which I own and had recommended to you in my earlier comments) would be appropriate and look good on the board.

Be sure to check the board square size vs King base diameter data and recommendations at the bottom of the webpage.

Had I known you would consider spending $300 on a chess board, I would have recommended that you check out Drueke Chess boards (made by Drueke Games).

The Dreuke chess board is a great, SOLID WOOD chess board.  Iconic in fact, and generally revered by those who own them. I would go so far as to call it the best (mass produced) chess board made in America.  There are several forum threads on chess.com relating to the Drueke chess products.  I own several of their solid wood boards and would never part with them.  They also make chess pieces which I am not particularly a fan of, but others feel differently.  I don't think their pieces have the same quality of artistry and craftsmanship as the pieces offered by HOS, The Chess Store etc.  To me this can be judged most clearly in the design and details of craftsmanship of the knights.  But again, as they say, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

The founder of Drueke died a few years ago, and his grandson is now making the boards and selling them on eBay - here is one of his listings.

This Drueke board, at $250, has 2.25 inch squares and could accommodate most 4 inch Kings.

You might even consider trying to cancel the purchase of your board and then save $50 by getting the Drueke.  You would not regret it.

Just discovered these JLP Woodworking solid wood boards being sold by chesshouse.  They appear to be virtually identical to the Drueke boards in appearance, materials, quality and workmanship.  This is the first I have heard of these boards, but its good to know someone is also making what appears to be a high quality solid wood board.

Oh, Mr Bell. You are one of those ones that put up links that take me to places I should not go ...

From your link I then found this one:

And now, my home needs that table for Friday/Saturday evening games.

My family thanks you sir, my hungry family thanks you ....

lol...

I know exactly how you feel.  I too saw that lovely chess table, its siren song beckoning me....and muttered under my breath "...oh, my goodness!..", then quickly closed the webpage.  But, yes, it is one of the nicer chess tables I've seen.

Hopefully my three Drueke solid wood chess boards can continue to keep any additional chess board purchases in abeyance...

Convey my apologies to your hungry family...

Hmm. Interesting.
One of the drueke boards would be more desirable? I bought this one because I thought it was an outrageous deal! As for square size, I don't own a nice set. With getting such a good deal on the board, I was willing to accept it dictating the size of the pieces I get.
I contacted the seller. The squares are 2".

Then this set that Eyechess mentioned (in post #17) would fit nicely on that board:

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/staunton-chessmen/products/paul-morphy-ebonised-chessmen

I also just purchased that set and it is a beautiful set.

The one RussBell mentioned (in post #32) would also look very nice on that board.

Yes the Paul Morphy pieces look nice, and at 1.5 inch King base diameter, would work well with a 2 inch square chessboard.  However, the officialstaunton website appears to be located in the UK as the prices are quoted in British Pounds (139GBP).  Were the pieces you ordered from them shipped from the UK?  Any problems with shipping to USA?  [Edit: eychess answers these questions later, in post #40].

However checking once again at The Chess Store, the following set should also work well with a 2 inch square board...and they are handsome pieces...

The Parker Staunton series....3.75 inch King height, 1.5 inch King base diameter (the sweet spot!)...ebonized boxwood.....$120USD (with free shipping)....

I am not willing to say that the Drueke board is more desireable for you than the one you ordered.  Only you can make that judgement.  Clearly the board you have ordered is extremely nice.  However I can say that the Drueke boards are exceptional quality and if they appeal to you aesthetically, I would think that you would never regret owning one.  In fact, I believe that you would likely be very proud to own one.  But the same may also be true, for you, of the board you have ordered.

The primary appeal of a Drueke board is that not only are they built well and will, with proper care, last virtually forever, but they are made of ALL SOLID WOOD.  You will notice that very few chess boards can advertise that they are made of all solid wood.  The JLP Woodworking chess boards being another notable exception to the norm.  Most other so-called wood chess boards are made of wood verneers, in part or in whole.  Not so with Drueke or JLP solid wood boards.

If you decide to stay with the board you ordered, feel confident that you have a very nice chess board, and don't second guess yourself.  Just take your time to be careful of the chess pieces you decide on, so that you will also be proud of them.  For me, small differences in the size of the pieces is not as important as the design and the quality of craftsmanship.  If you like the way they look, if they appear to you to work well with the board, and if you enjoy playing with the set, then you have a winner!

On the Official Staunton website, in the upper right hand part of the page is an option to use different denominations of money including US Dollars.

They have a flat charge for shipping to the USA, no matter where in the continental US.

And it comes really fast.  I received my set in less than 72 hours after ordering, and I'm in Peoria, Illinois.

I currently own and have owned a lot of Chess sets.  That Paul Morphy set from Official Staunton Company is one of the nicest.

And understand I'm not talking about cost at all.  This set easily compares with sets that cost 2 - 3 times more than it costs.

If he can still get the discounted price from Carl, I argue that there is no better set for the money except the HoS Players Series, which is larger for a 2.25" board instead of a 2.0" one.

I own sets that cost up to $900.  This set sold by Official Staunton and the HoS Players Series sets both are as nice, if not a bit nicer than a few of my sets that sell for $400 up to $500.

I'm not saying other sets are not nice, but these 2 are exceptionally nice.

Good feedback Eyechess.  That answers my concern about ordering from the officialstaunton site.  Thank you.
