3d printing (and four axis CNC wood carving even more) are going to have an effect on chess piece manufacture as the machinery prices continue to fall. All that angst about the one true Jaques reproduction will have to subside (or be acknowledged as a purely aesthetic choice) when reproducing a set becomes as matter of scanning and reproducing an object to within a tenth of a millimeter or so.
