Interesting. A little too minimalist for me.
Ron, understood. I love the minimalist design. For me, it captures the essence of the Staunton design. The S.2 version is less minimalist. But you asked whether anyone had done it.
There's a rather famous case of the guys who 3D copied Marcel Duchamp's set, and got into a big IP dispute. They ended up adding mustaches to the design.

It's off topic, but since Ron raised the question of minimalist design, there are a couple pics of the BCE Stage 2 design, which is less minimalist.
I bought a 3D printed set from Joseph Larson.

The plastic is not good but the price was incredibly cheap and I bought it for the unique design hearkening back to transformer toys from my youth.
I expect sets printed in better mediums would be a pricier.
I don't know why pictures from my website no longer display on this site. The image I tried to post is http://www.tykroll.com/chess/staunton/chessbot/bot31.JPG
Hey Guys - Just wondering if anyone has tried this? Would LOVE to see the results. Imagine a 5" King Drueke vintage #38 or vintage Chavet set in marble swirl resin
