Here's a great chess book I just finished: "Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess" -- Although I'm not a fan of the student/teacher diaglog method used, it was still filled with many tips I use today. I recommend it! Bought mine on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2I4mqM9

Decent book for beginners. Can be found for a very reasonable price used in good to excellent / like new condition.

I bought Chess for Dummies for someone else as I thought it contained outright beginner concepts only. I looked through the book, realised it was more in depth so bought a different book for the friend and am reading through Chess for Dummies myself.

Before that I read The Right Way to Play Chess and before that Playing Computer Chess.

Chess for Dummies is well laid out in that you can follow the examples on a physical board if you want to but don’t need to as examples are illustrated in diagrams.

Similarly I found that "Idiot's Guide to Chess" was not all straightforward
