I was having a look at Modern Chess Openings today but since I just recently started playing chess, I have absolute no idea how to correctly interpret the charts that are on every page. Could somebody explain to me how to properly use the charts? Thanks!

Don't spend your time studying openings as a beginner.

Instead read this article and get all the basic open "rules" down first.

If MCO is considered too hard for me, then what books would you recommend for me?

The following opening books would be more helpful for a beginner:

Winning in the Opening by John Walker

Discovering Chess Openings: Building Opening Skills from Basic Principles by John Emms

Winning Chess Openings by Yasser Seirawan

Ideas Behind the Chess Openings by Reuben Fine
