A used old set I bought at Goodwill. Interested to learn more info about it.

Hi, I want to show you guys a photo of an old relatively worn but intact chess set I bought from goodwill about a year ago. I am curious whether this kind of set has any value. Not looking to make big money or anything, just wondering out of curiosity. The kings seem to be a little crooked. What I think is the former owner’s name is written on it.

I have just about zero knowledge of chess sets (unlike the chess players who collect them and talk about them like a work of art), but it looks interesting though. I'm here to learn too happy.png

I'm sure it is worth something and at Goodwill prices, I'm sure you got your moneys-worth. The pieces don't look in ideal condition, but they still look good (the condition makes this look old in a good way, I kind of like it; it is kind of like a rustic patina). I wouldn't even try to price this set with my limited knowledge, but looks like a good purchase to me happy.png

It looks to be a Lardy. Crooked pieces are common with Lardy sets.

I agree, it's Lardy. The "Made in France" thing confirms it. I understand some people like them.

How tall is the King looks older finely detailed knight. Nice set looks like a Lardy

The kings are exactly 3 and 3/8 of an inch. 8.8 cm in normal, metric system. Lol

And who said retro toy hunting was limited to pop culture IPs and merchandise?

I have replacement pieces for similar French style sets of that size. for example if you wanted to replace the warped bishops, probably cost you more than you paid for the set. What did the set cost you
