Advice on chess engines and database creation

I am interested in creating a database of chess games that will allow me to search games based on players, openings, and positions. I'm a bit new to this, so I'm not really sure how to go about the task. I'm currently working with Houdini using the Winboard GUI, and have cobbled together a collection of master games (single PGN files for each master, e.g. Steinitz, that contain hundreds or thousands of games by that individual), but I can't sort by opening or search positions. I don't really care for the Winboard GUI either. I’ve also got Chessmaster 9000, which allows me to perform the functions that I am looking for, but I’d like something a bit more up to date. Does anyone out there have any recommendations for putting together a comprehensive database? I'm tempted to just put the money out and buy fritz or rybka, as it appears that doing so would provide me with a readymade package of what I'm looking for. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You could try Scid, and also maybe the ICOfY database. If that doesn't meet your needs, I guess you could always open up your wallet for a commercial product.

Hey, thanks for the feedback; I'll check both out.

Yeah, Chessbase 11 looks really cool. I might just have to save up a few bucks and purchase it.
