Understanding pins and learning to see them really helped me out. Some are obvious, like pins against the king, but others are a lot more subtle.
The other idea that helped me is playing for squares, like paying attention to weak squares, etc. For example, if your opponent has a fianchettoed kingside, a good strategy to have is to draw that bishop out and exchange it for a knight or rook so your own bishop can take advantage of the weak squares around the king.
