Hey,

I want to buy a wooden chess set for a reasonable price that looks like this:

https://www.houseofstaunton.com/the-queens-gambit-inspired-combo-3-75-king.html

But everywhere, they seem to be sold out, including sites such as Chessbazaar. Is it normal this time of the year and do I just have to wait a bit?
Thanks

No, it's not normal and I just looked and it appears they have plenty of other sets available in that price range.

Whatever surge there has been has been blamed on a combination of the pandemic keeping people home bound and the success of "The Queen's Gambit".

(Given your choice, it seems you may be part of that wave.)

True I have been playing for 16 years with some breaks in between and seeing those beautiful chess sets in the show made me want to buy one.

But sorry, those are all out of stock. maybe I'm missing something here

You are fine.  There was a big rush of orders at most all of the set retailers just after the series came out.  Pretty much every retailer in the USA saw their inventories depleted.

so, right now these places are out of stock, especially on sets that look like ones seen in the series.

Yes, many of the least expensive wood sets are sold out but they still have dozens if not hundreds of more expensive sets in stock.

Ran across this at the HoS amazon storefront.  Close enough?  Claims to be in stock as of Jan. 6 12:45 CST.

Thank you and thank you to all the others as well. Unfortunately, this one won't deliver to Europe. I will wait patiently, I can a few more weeks happy.png

Why do you want this set in particular, just because it's being advertised as "inspired by The Queen's Gambit"? Well, it's not. It's a bog standard German knight set, one of several different styles used on TQG, and probably the least interesting. Of the other sets from the show, the more original ones are a modified "fierce knight" Staunton set and the Soviet-Latvian style so prominently featured in the final episode.

I own this set and it’s fine.  No one is telling you what you should like or want.  So don’t tell others.

Come on, this is just your opinion...no reason to be so nasty. shrug

Personally, I love these "timeless" sets and the woodwork on this one looks particularly nice (to my eyes). I'd definitely purchase another, especially when it's from a vendor that seems trustworthy.

Go to House of Chess. They are not out of stock.

Every set House of Staunton sells was made in India. So sound67 and I go direct through the Indian chess set makers. Lower costs and the same quality. I do buy from HoS when I can't get the set I want directly from an Indian set maker.

I was merely making a suggestion. Plus, if the thread starter really wants such a set he can get it from a vast number of shops without having to pay the high shipping charges of HoS to Europe (plus mandatory customs charges). Just google for "German knight Staunton" set on portals like eBay or Etsy:

https://www.etsy.com/de/search?q=german%20knight%20staunton%20

Stop insulting me.  I have not insulted you even though you have provided quite a bit of material to do so against you.

You made less of that set design.  I said some people, including me, liked it.  I said I owned that design of set and it was good.

I never told him or anyone else they should buy it from HoS.  So stop saying I am acting as an agent for any company, which I certainly am not.

You and your insult will now be reported.

All of the sites have been sold out since the 2nd week of Queen's Gambit release. Many people suddenly took an interest in chess and were very desperate to get on the band wagon. HOS even sold out of their $1600 sets which is crazy. It's like when Bobby Fischer won and chess suddenly became a very popular and hip thing. I see it as a rerun when Tickle Me Elmo came out and people were forking over up to $10,000 just to get their hand on one. The fever will soon die down.
