Analog Chess Clock!

@GJW4922 - Hi Gordon, I found a new specimen for my Jantar collection. This one is a special version for the blind, it seems. It has metal buttons on the front glass and an additional outer metal hand, so that by touching the outer hand you can always tell how much time is left. What seems a bit odd is that the position of the outer metal hand is 10 minutes behind the inner hand. It should, of course, have the same position, but I have not yet dared to reposition it for fear of damaging something. Also, the push buttons were tweaked a bit. The large (and usually not very well working) black plastic buttons were replaced by very smoothly working metal buttons.

Good afternoon to you, EfimLG47.  I was the one who sent you the link to this Yantar and it's great to hear you've safely received it. I believe that the positioning of the outer hands have been deliberately done in this manner so that it doesn't interfere with the sight lines of two players using the clock that are not blind. This way they'll more easily be able to determine the  amount of time remaining when the flag is close to falling.  I suppose a pair of blind players aren't supposed to be too overly concerned about exactly when a flag has fallen!! It's great that the metal buttons work quite smoothly and I suppose this enhancement was done because blind players might not always be applying a directly downward force on these buttons when they are in a time scramble so extra toughness is possibly desirable.  It sure is quite the clock, Holger, and I'm glad to hear it's in fine operating condition! What do you think of my chess board from Wooden Gifts by Joseph? He only charged $658.00 for it but it would have easily been double or triple that amount on a lot of other chess paraphernalia websites. The squares are 2 1/4 inches and the board is built like a rock!

Oh yes, that's right, Gordon, and thank you again for providing the link. With all the nicknames, aliases and email addresses around I sometimes get confused. I did associate your message with your chess.com profile when I received it, but I forgot the connection when I posted the pictures earlier today. Anyhow, it is a great clock in great condition and just the thing to add to the Jantars I already have!

Hello again, EfimLG47!

I get confused with people and Chess.com user names as well. No problem! Have you seen that Netflix series "The Queen's Gambit"? It's so well done!! The Moscow tournament at the end of the series - episode seven - shows a lot of those black carbolite Jantars so I've went and purchased one! They're sure large clocks but that's OK and I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

I got one of these as well. Great clock! You will definitely like it.

Hi Jantar experts! Today I recived this "negative" version of Jantar chess clock. Dial is black, numbers white and hands silver. Have any of You some information about this variation? I heard this is a special edition for some anniversary of the factory.

EfimLG47

@mgyuri73 - unfortunately, I do not have any further information on the black Jantar, but it is a great clock. Congratulations!

I am thanking all of you for responding to this post. For years, I felt alone in my affinity towards analog chess clocks. I have always felt the appearance of an analog  chess clock to be far superior to its digital counterparts. Furthermore, I prefer that an analog chess clock does not need batteries. In my opinion, analog chess clocks got it right: no batteries for garbage landfills, and a classy appearance. Sometimes low tech is the best option (even in the 21st century).

Hi guys. Since Yantar is Soviet brand, in Russia left a lot of it's clock. There's specialized russian website of rare and antique items Starina.ru, where you can find this and other chess clock for very low price. I can help with it, by the way, if anybody interresting with it.

Mikhail_peskov

I can translate your search requests to russian to help find items you need, and ask seller can he speak english and do worldwide shipping or not. In lucky case buyer can speak with seller directly and do the deal without me.

@GJW4922, I just received a colored red Yantar In its original box. It is colored plastic, and the box indicates that you could get them in red, yellow, grey, green, blue and purple as well as white. It would be interesting to see in anyone has seen any of the other colors. The two you have that are painted may have been a test from the factory to see if there was a market for colors.

This past weekend, my digital chess clock completely stopped working. The situation had nothing to do with fresh batteries. Now I am only taking an analog chess clock with me. I have never had a problem with my analog chess clocks: wind up and play.

PM’d you, Shelby.

Hi Shelby...  I'm a fan of these Jerger analogs myself and thought I'd share a photo of my Jerger blitz clock which I don't see too many of. Enjoy!

Here's a photo of my Russian Yantar blitz clock that I put in a red (good Russian color!) case. I oiled the clock while I was at it and also touched up the orange stars. The "before" picture is about 2/3rds of the way down page 3 of this forum. Fun and games!

Hi again, Shelby. Absolutely I'll pick one up for you if I get the chance. I love this crazy clock too!

I like to play with analog clocks. The digital clocks have a lot of advantages, but somehow I like mechanical things.
