you're definitely getting better at this

Oh...I see. The unpolished ones are new and you made them? They are very good. It took me a second to realize.

Pawns are maybe to big for the associated pieces (if you want criticism)--and honestly it seems true even in the original set. But overall very nice.

Impressive to say the least. I've always respected you Powder, but now I have new admiration for you....Maybe a little envious....Ha.

Hey Jubilation, no problem with the critique - I’m just learning - it’ll never be a commercial enterprise- just me learning to make pieces for myself. It’s good for my mind as it is completely different from my day job and uses different mental muscles. 👍

Looks good Powder. Just keep up the good work.

Echoing the positive vibes already going here @Powderdigit! Your efforts are indeed producing good works of art. Look how far you’ve come in just a short time. I appreciate the courage to post your work for our enjoyment. Keep on turning! Do you have your eyes on a home lathe or is the shop you frequent open for use? I know of some shops that are available for a membership fee, but they are few and far between in my neck ‘o the woods (USA).

Hey Wits, good to hear from you, as usual. I appreciate your positive vibes!

I think I will get a lathe one day - just a midi of some sort - alas, I’ll need to save some pennies for that purchase!! I am lucky enough to have a woodturners guild with lathe’s aplenty about 25 minutes away. That is where I am learning and as a member - which I now am- I can use their shed anytime. 👍

Here’s a lovely local find - well, I reckon - perhaps other’s might not like it. I have always admired raised-edge vintage chess boards but they are not so easy to find. Alas, recently, I found one and I really like it … nothing special but wonderful in its vintage state. No doubt made in someone’s garage many, many years ago …some misaligned squares here and there … given I am feeling quite sick with a cough 😷 at present - this made my day!

Nice board Mark. The set looks great on it. Good pick up.

That’s a good find Mark. Just curious... which is your favorite board?

Avatar of magictwanger

Why am I not surprised you continually push the "savvy collectors" envelop Mark?

Tel me...Tell me.wink

Thanks all. My favourite board? Hmmm… I’m going to ponder that and sit on the fence … and say … it depends on the pieces …
I am fortunate to have an array of boards that allow me to mix and match pieces. The marquetry board is beautiful (but quite an eyeful when playing) and the first board that started this thread is close to the top but… small squares means playing is somewhat restricted to smaller pieces. I’m going to think that question through more before providing a definitive answer and maybe, a definite answer won’t come! 🥴😊
There’s the red board matched with Sandor Biro’s pieces … Nup … not yet ready to choose a favourite!😆

Ok …it might surprise some but my favourite is probably the large and heavy board noted in post #163. There’s some beauty in its relatively plain but functional design and it also at matches well with so many of my pieces.

Or, of course, today’s latest addition …I have a soft spot for new entries into the collection.😉

Yes, the best of both! You gain from being a member with experienced instruction and discover what type of equipment you will eventually purchase. You are indeed fortunate my friend. Dr. Wits recommends plenty of Vitamin C, water, rest, and fresh air. Hope you’re feeling better today.

The one from 163 is a good choice.

Learning, learning … another Sunday and more experimenting on a lathe at a local woodturner’s guild. This time, through a basic error - not leaving enough wood on the pieces such that it can be moved from a spindle to a chuck - my attempt at a Regence King was cut short when it kept popping out of the Chuck … hence an unfinished top and ugly cuts from the chuck! The Rook is better albeit I haven’t yet cut turrets in the top. Yep… learning, learning … this is also just spare softwood (pine), which tends to spilt and splinter!

Wow, that is good stuff, Mark!

I suspect you must have knowledgeable and patient teachers at your shop, a good eye yourself, the resilience to learn [from your errors], and the will to continue your journey.

At this rate, your relaxing hobby might become your post-retirement side-business!?

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Patrick. Yes I have an excellent, patient and very knowledgable teacher - he’s excellent in that watches me, let’s me makes my mistakes (to learn) and then helps correct them by both doing and talking. He’s a master woodturner himself and I’m very lucky … he’s thinks I am batsh!tcr@zy turning finicky chess pieces. Perhaps I am! Patience will be the key and whether I ever invest in a lathe myself … not yet sure. It certainly won’t be a commercial side hustle - maybe gifts to family and friends. More a pastime to keep my mind and hands active.👍

This chess board was advertised online and not far away from where I live. I don’t need another chess board …

Apparently I do! This board is huge, heavy and beautifully made! It’s 65cm square with 8cm squares - built like a tank! All it needed was the lightest of fine sanding and lick of wax/oil.

After I had picked it up, I found a label on the back and it’s crafted by an artisan - Paul Lambe - who, from a quick internet search, now works in Western Australia, I believe! I’m impressed with his work - albeit I am not sure when this was made. I think from the label he is a furniture maker who maybe used to live in Victoria.

I was happy to part a few dollars - the guy selling was happy to receive something because he does not play chess and rescued it from curb-side refuse/hard rubbish as it is called … and I have a new keeper! Although big, it is a great size for some of my biggest chess pieces. As seen in the latter pics.

First some scratches:

then … scratches be gone …

I like the subtle raised edge too
