@cgrau Do the Tal sets have a nautical history in the beginning? Which might explain the wide chunky bases and heavy weights? Or just an evolution of style and aesthetics through the years.
I don't think the design originates in nautical history. I do think it derived from a particular set, but that is a story for another day.

Congrats! Wow! That set is nice! It is very hard to make out the details of the set from photos, so it is very refreshing to see an original set.
This set is truly exceptional. For some reason, I was not surprised to hear it is heavily weighted. This show the quality difference of the sets they made for the masses versus those made for the more elite. This is very nice.
