Seems like the bases for the pieces are sqauter on the replica set. I must say I'm not a terribly big fan of that original knight.
BCC Popular Replica Vs. Original
To me half of the pieces in the original set look disproportionate, like they belong to a completely different set. Most notably the bishop, which I find unappealing and which is, frankly, huge, although the knight is much too small and doesn't fit either. I think they attempted to fix that in the repro, adding a bit of water to the vinegar. Overall I like the lines of the repro much better, and I wouldn't care to play on the original too much.
This set is certainly an acquired taste 😂
But on the other hand the pieces do feel incredibly good in the hand, and it plays very satisfyingly on the board.
I never thought I’d say this but between this and my early Jaques set I actually prefer this one 👍
Plus how many chess sets can claim to be featured in a Hollywood movie?
The goggle eyed knights are a little anemic looking compared to the beefy bishops but other than that I LOVE this set as well. I will get the measurements on the box when I get home this weekend
Apologies if I've bored everyone to death on this topic, but I thought it might be interesting to compare HOS's replica BCC Popular 4" set against the real antique pieces. Below is my (rather poor) attempt to compare these two sets using images from their website along side an image I took of the actual set:
The biggest difference I can see is in the carving of the knights. The head of the knight in the original is narrower, and the cuts are more angular and deeper, especially in the neck and muzzle area.
The bishop also appears shorter in comparison to the queen in the replica, whereas they are much closer in height in the original.
