I would say Lardy chess set is the best design ever. It just feels good. Not too big, not too small and not distracting.

Author/philosopher Albert Camus wrote in The Myth of Sisyphus that he was certain of only one philosophical truth, that a man sees one great vision as a child and spends the rest of his life trying to recapture it.  To me, that means things like "What's the best chess set design?" is individual and depends on what great vision of chess one first saw when young.

@Impractical, that’s exactly how it was for me. I first went to a chess club as a 13 year old in the late 70s. I was the only child there and it was held in a function room above a hotel bar. Most of the blokes would smoke and drink as they played. I got my ass handed to me in the first few games I played, but I remember thinking how great the chess sets were. They were big, old and heavy, and Staunton style. I do not know what the manufacturers were, and they were mismatched, battle worn sets so wouldn’t be worth much money. But I think it’s the memory of those sets that sparked my current obsession with chess sets. I still look for big, old and heavy.
And now I am big, old and heavy!

Exactly! I played with the seniors when I was a kid, that's how it got me start smoking! The smell of sweet tobacco's from pipes...num num num.

I'm expecting delivery of this set on Monday:

This set was actually my "second choice" at the time, as the one I really wanted was sold just before I was ready to purchase.  Still, I'm very much looking forward to its arrival in just a few days!  I really like knights with reins (both my first choice, and this set share this feature).

All that said, acquiring beautiful sets that inspire memorable games played with them is not such a bad chronic quest, is it?

Rosewood and Boxwood.  King is 4.1",  Base 1.9"  Two extra queens.

And the fact is, sound67, you do not know or understand Chess sets well enough to be able to identify Chess set perfection or not.

You have come on this forum completely biased against any person or company offering a set at what you think is too expensive.  I am sure you have never handled, let alone owned a high quality set.  You only want the cheap stuff.
Noj is not the only company or person producing high quality Chess sets, you schmuck.

Carl of Official Staunton, Frank Camaratta who started and sold The House of Staunton, Chess Empire and Chopra are a few others.

I only own 6 Noj sets.  And I own at least 36 others made in India.  So what you Chess set expert wannabe?

If you didn’t figure it out I am tired and done with you and your low priced buddy, KnightsForkCafe, taking shots at me and others because we like high quality stuff.  Enough is enough.
I declare war on you and him.  You are both Chess set and equipment degenerates.

Be assured that I will no longer suffer you and him as the fools you are.

What a cringeworthy try hard. Hopefully you've grown up in the last year.

There's quite a bit of history here of which you may not be aware.  Their interactions with @Eyechess often went far beyond mere banter and agree-to-disagree.  Hopefully all of us have matured in the last year.

Hahaha, well, yeah.  Neither have I but note the "Hopefully"... tongue.png

You both and the rest of you all have not matured, it is only I that have matured.

DesperateKingWalk, I agree with you...but why do we think this? Is it the history associated with the set, or is there something about Art?
