To go with your Russian chess set  LOL """""""

Haha! Forget promoting to a queen. I will take John. He can stand right next to the tired leaning knight.

For me the 1849 Jacques Cook Staunton design. Is the best chess set design ever.

Impractical

DesperateKingWalk, I agree with you...but why do we think this? Is it the history associated with the set, or is there something about Art?

First and foremost it is the lines and proportion of the chess set. The design is just beautiful and a pleasure to play without being overdone.

This design just gets the balance right. And you can tell much thought was given to designing the set that is playable, distinctive, beautiful, and easy to manufacture for mass production.

And it is no wonder this set design became the standard for chess play. A chess set design released in 1849.
