The Imperial collector is another great set from HOS. Though there are now many versions available on etsy and ebay, I still prefer the original over the copies.

  • That's The Sinquefield cup set used from 2013 to 2017? I have the CB version of it.  Camarotta tells a story of getting the idea for the knights from a unicorn he saw at a toy store.

That's right. I've seen that interview of Frank Camaratta with Yaseer.

This is again a very beautiful design from chessbazaar. This is called the red rum series. Quite spectacular.

Hello!

Does anyone recognize this
set? I would appreciate any information regarding where I might purchase it.

Hi Tim, This is called the Admiral Series chess set on chessbazaar. https://www.chessbazaar.com/offers-zone/clearance-sale/the-admiral-series-staunton-luxury-chess-pieces-in-ebony-wood-box-wood-4-5-king.html

Hi!

Thank you very much for replying, and for doing so in a meaningful and constructive way. Despite their intention and enthusiasm, so many replies on forums are too much distanced from relevancy to be helpful.

I agree, that is very similar. But as is often the case with 'hommage' sets, they tend to fall down on the knight (that's one angry horse), which requires a degree of aesthetic investment that often defeats the price point the manufacturer is aiming at. Thanks again!

Hello again!

Do chess sets have vintage? Can someone who has been more intimate with chess equipment over the years than I (I've happily played the same vintage ivory tournament set for several decades) tell me if quality chess sets are affected by 'vintage'? That is to say, is a particular set (regardless of brand) likely to 'evolve' over time (or as manufacturing changes), wherein individual pieces are reworked to a different character (as might be the case here) while the rest of the set remains largely unchanged, such that a set becomes an element in a series identified by the changes describing it? Thanks!

This was a set sold by The Chess Piece in Florida. I remember drooling after it myself. They called the set the Jazzy Trio. Sorry to say that set, and many others, are now unavailable as Steve is getting out of the business (it's hard to compete when your suppliers decide to sell direct cutting you, the middle man, out of the loop). Steve had a lot of sets specially made for the Chess Piece. I don't recall ever seeing anyone else offering this exact set.

Hello!

Thank you very much for replying. Even this bad news will settle my want of something I can't have. What a shame. I'm a big fan of quality, especially when it justifies its price. Our only hope is that someone will start using a 3D printer to bring these beautiful sets back into circulation.  Do people sell chess sets somewhere on this site I wonder. I'm going to look now. Ever hopeful.

Tim,

There may still be hope! Check out this link.

BINGO!

Thank-you very much for your vigilance and diligence both. My wife chose these, and I didn't want to disappoint her. Now how do I explain to her that she needs a chess clock? I think she'll want one of the old large Soviet Jantar analog pieces rather than the VTEK 300 or Chronos I prefer for daily play. You are a gentleman sir, thank-you.

These designs are so beautiful. I just bought a DGT e-board and will soon be ordering new weighted electronic pieces. I hope to get the Fischer series!

loubalch

Tim,

I have a fancy DGT XL clock that I never use. Instead, I picked up one of their North American units ($40 US) which does everything I need it to do, and it's easier to use. Check it out and see if it has all the timing presets you'll need. I like the bold numbers and the high-contrast display.

I know you're in the Great White North, but I thought the numerous reviews from real chess players might be helpful. Besides, between Canada and the U.S., we make up 2/3 of North America, so this is as much your clock as it is ours! Cheers!

Tim,

Re: The Trio Chess Set

R4290 Rand (South African) currently works out to about $336 Canadian.

tskeldon

Hi!

That's kind of you, but I have two digital units (a VTEK 300 and a Chronos) that she doesn't like the look of (or the programming of in the case of the Chronos); that's why I got the VTEK. The big analog faced Soviet era Jantar units were shown again in the NetFlix series, The Queens's Gambit, and she seems to like those. Did I mention that she's Russian, and that her father was a Grand Master (and a 3 star general in Stalinesque Russia). I'm disinclined to pay the $250-350 US the Russian sellers are charging on Etsy for a such a limited device, but I guess they are a piece of chess history and a part of her childhood heritage. I'll show her your unit to see if she is any more inclined to it than mine. Thanks for offering it

Tim,

Here's a beautiful set (the Attica) that I recently picked up from Staunton Castle for only $230 US on sale. It has many similar elements to the Jazzy Trio set above, and for less money (the Jazzy Trio sold for $350). I love the set. Outstanding knights, very classy! Top quality.

The Sher-E-Punjab set (or the Bucephalus set) is superior in design to that posted in the OP in that it is far more beautiful than those sets (in my opinion). It has a higher level of design sophistication

Love that set Lou.....Seems to be very fairly priced as well......Classy!...Nice job.
