I find Arena clunky and complicated to use. Scid or Scid Vs PC is my choice.
I like both, for different purposes. Arena is good for engine-engine tournaments, and Scid vs. PC is good for database work.

Anyone know if the Arena developer might be willing to open source it? There's been no updates in seven years and it's not a paid app. It's got usability issues but it seems to be the most feature rich app out there.
Lucas chess is by far the best free chess gui with many features

Next is Banksia chess gui
Next is Arena chess gui older but still great
By the way, why run Stockfish 13? Version 15.1 is available, for free.
Because the thread was started two years ago?
so chessbase reader is good option?
Sure, if you don't mind using crippled software...

I like liground because it also plays Shogi and has a huge set of pieces to look really cool.

I know I am very late to answer this question. But, for now, have a look at EN-CROISSANT chess software. Its original size is about 4kb(very small amount. For comparison an HD picture is about 100 times more than the software itself). However point to be noted that it may take up space to download engines. They are constantly updating the chess engines and databases. As you might see. STOCKFISH 17 was released about a week ago and the software has it since then. Stockfish 17 size is about 62.38mb. Databases can also be downloaded, I have the latest one which is 2024 database with about 5.5 million games. Database size is 1.23gb. There is an option for offline puzzles as well. Lichess puzzles database can be downloaded with more than 3.1 million puzzles and it is only 323.34mb. There is an option to update the software from the software itself for hassle-free use. You can download the engines and databases with lower space as well.
To download just search your web browser for “EN-CROISSANT CHESS SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD FREE”
hats off to the people who read till the end. It took me 1 hour to write this. Hopefully it helps as well
What EtashGarg1234 said is really true. I tried en-croissant and it really is easy to use! Most notably, it can download your games from chess.com and lichess.org and turn them into a database that you can search through. Like if you want to find all your games against a certain elo range or a certain player, you can filter through it and find those games all without having to navigate the website. Best Open Source Chess database software I have used so far. I have also installed Chessx and Scid but I am too stupid to figure them out.
En-croissant seems to be a good start to another database and analysis app, but it's still early in its development. Several features don't quite work consistently yet, and needed features are not yet implemented (eg. puzzle tactics report, chess tree, database manipulation). But the basic features it has now look great.
