Best PDA for Chess

Sort:
Greychild

I originally tried buying a standalone chess computer for when I'm travelling.  Of the two sorts available (mini board and PDA-style) I opted for the PDA-style, because I thought it'd be too easy to lose the mini board pieces when travelling.

However, I was a bit disappointed by the selection, because the PDA-style machines all seemed to have terrible blocky dot-matrix or LCD graphics, and didn't have all the features I wanted (e.g. being able to save games and transfer them to my computer).

I eventually decided to go the whole hog and buy an actual PDA plus chess software.  The PDA I went for is the Hewlett-Packard IPAQ 212.

The reasons were as follows:

  • It's a standalone PDA, with no phone or camera.  I already have a mobile phone - this is just for chess.  I didn't want to buy a unit that was larger than necessary because of features I don't want.
  • It has no physical keyboard, but that doesn't impact the (stylus controlled) chess applications.  This means more of the face of the unit is taken up by the screen.  Obviously, you can use a virtual on-screen keyboard with the stylus when necessary.
  •  It has a whopping 4 inch screen, so I don't have to squint.  That obviously makes it larger than a normal PDA or smartphone, but that's fine - it's not like I carry it with me all the time.
  • It's larger size also means a very powerful processor by PDA standards, and good battery life despite the big screen.

Overall, it's just perfect for my needs (albeit clearly an expensive decision).  In terms of applications, I've been using PocketGrandmaster, which has brilliant graphics and features, and can support a variety of chess engines.

Chess Genius is a very good program as well as pocket fritz. From my experience I would estimate their ratings around 2350-2400.

I'm a beginner, so I don't require a deep blue type of challenge...

...but Chess 1.6 on my iPhone can currently give me a good game.

Hi greychild,

your decision for the ipaq is a very good one. I could recommend an asus mypal 626,

which is cheaper but with a slightly smaller screen (3.5). On the software side i bought some programs from convekta e.g. ct-art for pocket pc really great software.

Have fun
