Best way how to sold part of my collection?

I am living in Switzerland and I would like to sell part of my chess collection in the near future.

I know that some people here are interested in some of my items. I would like to know what you think about the best way to sell these items. eBay and the Swiss version “Ricardo” are two options. Do you know others? I am aware that sending things to US can be very expensive. What so you think about it? And insurance? I guess that this is important, right?  I don’t like the idea of selling slowly single items over decades. I prefer to sell most things within few weeks. If this goes well I can think on the possibility of selling other things (not chess related) that I also collect. But this is another story…

Some words about my collection. I am collecting since at least 20 years (I think). Hundreds of items of different quality, some very collectible.

Chess sets, clocks, boards, travel vosrds, books, pictures.. I also could consider selling my chess robot Novag Adversary (in working condition!), but only to people who would pick up the thing here, meaning: for people living in Switzerland or South Germany. But I am not sure about this, the thing is really cool!!

Some of the items are quite interesting, like 2 Solora clocks, 2 Looping clocks, two Garde Electronic, two exceptional Swiss clocks with a modern design, several rare books like one by Phillip Stamma. I have also several interesting modern books which are too high for me (I bought them for few money). I have most reprints from the edition Olms (I got them from a woman after her husband (a chess player) passed away.
I will certainly keep part of my collection, but only a fraction of it. I have too much stuff (not only chess related). I am not getting younger with the time (60 now), and I don’t like the idea to get old without having the time and the space to enjoy my collection. My apartment is full of books (something like 8 to 20 k), and they take the whole space. And I need the books for my work, so I have to make some decisions. Chess  is “just” an hobby.

Guys, I almost can’t believe I am talking about selling big part of my collection! On the other hand I like the idea that these things will go to the right people, who appreciate the beauty of chess items.

Perhaps I can start showing regularly my collection in a blog, so you can help me to identify the items and with their approximate value, so I can establish a reasonable starting price in an auction.

 Thanks for your help!

Unless the items are highly sought after and in perfect condition, the value will never be as high as a seller imagines. My advice to you is to price your items at discount for a fast, easy, stress-free, sale. Your time has value.

Ebay will have the widest audience. I've paid high shipping fees from around the world for the right item. Good luck!

Thanks. I have an idea of the value of part of the collection, but for some things I don’t have any idea, as I never found similar items in internet. I just thought I should  begin a blog here so some people can help me to identify and estimate the prices. But yes, you are right, this takes time.

You are right, I also purchased things from all the world and payed the shipping fees without complaining.

It sound to me that you have too much stuff which becomes just clutter , Start by looking at the stuff you want to keep & sell the rest or give it away / be it on ebay or even offer it here with a link etc, The downside you live in Switzerland so shipping &  import tax is high for the buyer , Unless you can ship from across the border say Germany ?  wink

It wouldn’t be too much if I would not have so many books. Without the books I would certainly keep much items, getting rid of of the things that I have twice.

Yes, I think my market would be basically Switzerland, with some sets going to other countries. However, I purchase already a lot of things from other countries, US, Germany, France, Australia, and other courses. If I like something I will also pay the shipping fees.

Where in Switzerland are you?  I lived in Luzern for 21 years before moving to Portugal - and come back to visit occasionally.  I have also watched with mild jealously your many flohmarkt treasure-findings.

Have you any Jaques sets in your collection?
brasileirosim

Bern. Originally I am from Brazil.

On a side note, I was fortunate to backpack with my wife around Europe way back in 1993 …. Switzerland is beautiful and Luzern … a postcard … such beauty! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to Bern. I feel fortunate to live in Melbourne and Australia generally but I can imagine that Switzerland must be an amazing place to live … the natural beauty seems wondrous.

Try to sell the more valuable items in direct sales to people / collectors you know and sell the rest with a discount via the various online platforms. You already mentioned ebay and Ricardo. Take a look at Catawiki in the Netherlands as well. In my experience the auctions at Catawiki get a good attention, too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check out Catawiki.
