Unless the items are highly sought after and in perfect condition, the value will never be as high as a seller imagines. My advice to you is to price your items at discount for a fast, easy, stress-free, sale. Your time has value.
Ebay will have the widest audience. I've paid high shipping fees from around the world for the right item. Good luck!
I am living in Switzerland and I would like to sell part of my chess collection in the near future.
I know that some people here are interested in some of my items. I would like to know what you think about the best way to sell these items. eBay and the Swiss version “Ricardo” are two options. Do you know others? I am aware that sending things to US can be very expensive. What so you think about it? And insurance? I guess that this is important, right? I don’t like the idea of selling slowly single items over decades. I prefer to sell most things within few weeks. If this goes well I can think on the possibility of selling other things (not chess related) that I also collect. But this is another story…
Some words about my collection. I am collecting since at least 20 years (I think). Hundreds of items of different quality, some very collectible.
Chess sets, clocks, boards, travel vosrds, books, pictures.. I also could consider selling my chess robot Novag Adversary (in working condition!), but only to people who would pick up the thing here, meaning: for people living in Switzerland or South Germany. But I am not sure about this, the thing is really cool!!
Some of the items are quite interesting, like 2 Solora clocks, 2 Looping clocks, two Garde Electronic, two exceptional Swiss clocks with a modern design, several rare books like one by Phillip Stamma. I have also several interesting modern books which are too high for me (I bought them for few money). I have most reprints from the edition Olms (I got them from a woman after her husband (a chess player) passed away.
I will certainly keep part of my collection, but only a fraction of it. I have too much stuff (not only chess related). I am not getting younger with the time (60 now), and I don’t like the idea to get old without having the time and the space to enjoy my collection. My apartment is full of books (something like 8 to 20 k), and they take the whole space. And I need the books for my work, so I have to make some decisions. Chess is “just” an hobby.
Guys, I almost can’t believe I am talking about selling big part of my collection! On the other hand I like the idea that these things will go to the right people, who appreciate the beauty of chess items.
Perhaps I can start showing regularly my collection in a blog, so you can help me to identify the items and with their approximate value, so I can establish a reasonable starting price in an auction.
Thanks for your help!
