Board Upgrade

I gave a board to a kid who has recently learned to play and fallen in love with chess. His dad had mentioned that they were playing on a DIY made board and when he explained the build I was surprised and impressed. They said they had gotten a used set of pieces off craigslist but had to make the board out of a bit of cardboard.

One of the coolest things about being a carpenter/woodworker is that you get to see this moment of joy on a clients face, when they first see your work. I think this kiddo wins the award for biggest response. He almost started crying when he saw the board. He broke open his box of pieces, set it up and said, "there's finally room for the pieces!"

Mr B! Expect one of these days to receive a drawing of a padauk or purpleheart chess board I made in your mailbox! You probably would say 'keep practicing son' right? Crap sad.png

Wonderful story Bryan. These are the ripples on life’s pond that we’ll never see the true extent of…. while the young person will never forget the board and your gift - who knows how your generosity will influence that person as he or she grows up … hopefully reflecting and amplifying your positive spirit and bringing joy to people in their lives too. A gift in a moment and yet a lifetime of impact.👍

Might be one of the best moves you could have made! RAK. Random Act of Kindness. Let’s all agree to choose one today. Well done Mr. B! Well done indeed.

Purpleheart?

I’d have tears of joy over purpleheart. A very nice act of kindness indeed 😀

Beautiful gift. It will become an heirloom and a family story.

Yes! Purpleheart and myrtlewood. Definitely a family heirloom. I expect they'll be playing on it for generations. The kiddo also, accidentally, gave me some excellent feedback on the hardwax oil finish. He ran his hand across it a few times and said "oh my gosh it's so smooth, it's so soothing."

I'll keep my eyes peeled for your board Michael!

RAK, definitely good for the world. Bonus is that you get a ton of feel goods for yourself and the science says, you actually feel better gifting to others, then you do buying a gift for yourself. Pretty cool.

Amazing! What a beautiful gift. He'll probably remember this for the rest of his life, and most likely use the board for that long too.

I can imagine the kid would still have this after many decades. He might one day teach his kids how to play chess on it.

In a land that time forgot…

A grandson, now a grown adult of 50 years old, logs on to chess.com. He finds the Boards & Equipment forum section. He posts a picture of a battle worn board with nicks, scratches, and marks from countless forays and pawn rushes. The Purple Heart and Myrtlewood is supremely and wonderfully aged to a mellow yet deep radiance. He asks “Does anyone have information about this board? It’s been in my family for years. I received it from my father who said it was Grandpa’s. The story, as I can remember, is that Grandpa was gifted this board when was a small child by a remarkably gifted craftsman who’s skill was surpassed only by his generosity and kindness. I wonder if, by chance, anyone knows of the fellow who crafted this board.”
