Bohemia Dog Knight Pieces from '50's or '60's

I've wanted to post a photo review of this wonderful set from Germany for a while now. Before it began using the "chicken-head" knight, the German manufacturer Bohemia used the so-called Dog knight. A fierce look that reminds me more of a dragon than a dog. The set came with variations in the colors of the bishops' finials. The opposite-colored ones, like these, seems to have been the rarest configuration. Goodknightmike posted about a like set a while ago.

It's moderately weighted and has a good feel in the hand. A good playing set that can travel.

Here it is on a German inlaid board.

I actually like the look of all the pieces.

I especially like the Bishops and Queens.  The Rooks are also very stylistic.

The Pawns are definitely not spindly or too thin.  And the Kings also look nice with the extra bevels and the cross showing the top part.

Of course the Knights are distinct.  It is interesting how these Knights and those of the Spanish and Romanian sets have the same kind of cuts and angles.

I do too, Ron. Great observations. The knights' profile is not dissimilar to that of many Soviet knights, as well.

Chuck, fantastic set and board, thanks for sharing. Was this an Ebay aquisition, as I noticed one seller recently listed a few similar sets.  No question about it ,the Knights have a dragon look.  So that collectors might compare our sets,  I have included a link to my  black lacquer set:

And here's a link to my West German set with the dark pieces in a stained lacquered brown like yours:

Very nice set. I also really like the board. What size squares? Is it commercially available or a lucky find? Ray

Thanks, Mike! You're exactly right. This was one of a lot of three Dog knight sets offered by the same seller.
