Borderless solid wood board 14"

Hello,

Please help me find the cheap solid wood board with no borders (1.75" square, 14" width). Walnut and Maple would be the best choice. The cheapest I could find is $100 from Eureka Puzzles:

Any suggestions?

Chess USA also has two "Padouk/Maple" versions of a solid-block 14" borderless, similar to the Eureka Puzzles board.  One is priced at $99, and the other is $229.  I called them to find out what the difference between the two boards was, they told me country of origin.  The more expensive board is from Spain, and the cheaper board is from Poland.  I asked if there were any really noticeable differences in quality between the two, and the guy I was on the phone with confided in me that they looked the same to him...

The $99 board can be bought for around $90 with shipping, if you use the coupon code on the Chess USA site.

BTW, I have the "Eureka Puzzles" walnut and maple board you brought up in your OP.  It is a nice board, I would probably buy it again.  Nice woods, full block construction, and good thickness.  Downside is that the corners of the squares are not always totally aligned, and the board came SLIGHTLY warped, with 2 corners touching the table before the other 2... maybe 1/16" of "bow" toward the center.  This is not a big deal, though... you can always stick 3 rubber "feet" on one side of the board, or put the board on cloth, or turn the board around and use the other side so that the "bow" is downwards, with a slight cavity of space underneath in the center.  Other than these minor quibbles, it's a really nice board for the price.

I have no real-world experience with the Chess USA boards.

Here is a photo of my "Eureka Puzzles" borderless solid-block Walnut/Maple 14" board.

You can see on the upper-left corner of the f8 square (where the black bishop is placed) what I mean by the square corners are not always lined up correctly.

Man! I just bought the same Zagreb set! It's awesome and looks good on that board. Thanks for advise

In my experience almost all boards in that price range have a little misalignment of squares. That is fine for me. I just looking for durable compact smooth solid board. Still hoping to find something below $100. happy.png

Yes, the 2.875" HoS Zagreb set is a perfect fit for 1.75" squares.   I bought the Blood Rosewood version... what wood did you get?

I agree with you about the squares misalignment... it's pretty common among inexpensive boards, and it's barely noticeable anyway.  I only see it when I'm looking for it.

I looked far and wide before I bought the Eureka Puzzles board... I don't think there is anything else out there in Walnut/Maple solid block constructed for anything near that price.  The Chess USA Padouk/Maple board is a slightly less expensive board, but 2 of my 4 small chess sets are Bud Rosewood or Blood Rosewood, which are most likely Padouk wood.  I wanted more contrast between the pieces and the board, so I went with the Eureka Puzzles Walnut/Maple board instead... even though it cost about $10 more.

I got regular rosewood ones. Wanted to get darker set without going with ebonized pieces and did not want to spend more for ebony. So rosewood it is. I'm using this set as a workhorse to play with coworkers on lunch breaks. I love that pieces are short and thick. Currently play it on linen board from HoS, but it's very rough board and I am worried about billiard cloth being roughed up.

I have one set in bud rosewood though and it's just stunning! It's my show off set.

BTW, can you recommend the appropriate forum where I can post my sets just to show them off, you know.

Thanks

Late update. I ended up just keeping playing on my linen board and it grew on me! Now I absolutely love the feel and look of my Zagreb on that linen board and wouldn’t trade it for no wooden board. 😃

Yes, I was looking at his drueke and tower series boards. Seems to be very good quality.
