C.J.S. Purdy's Search for Chess Perfection (2019 Edition)

I'm wondering if anyone knows if the Thinkers' Press revamping of "Search for Chess Perfection" will become available again in any form?

I'm aware Bob Long passed away earlier this year unexpectedly, and that he was the publisher, but I do hope this title gets a second shot at reaching the public.

Bob's blog made it sound like another batch was ordered from the printer, but perhaps these were all liquidated already.

I'm looking for a copy.

I was the model for the cover of the 2nd edition of this book. From the right (severe) angle, I looked a little like a young Purdy. That’s about as close to greatness as I’m ever going to get in chess.

Wow really?

Do you mean the original 2nd Volume that was released in 2006?

Thats quite the interesting tidbit.

Yup. That’s me (24 or so years ago).

Make that 14 or so years ago. Back when I was good at math.

I did not know that Bob passed away early this year. That explains why his blog ended in January.

Bob didn’t “pass away” he was murdered by a low life criminal during a home robbery. Very sad.

Bob did a first printing of 1,000 which he increased from 500 as many of his regular customers pre-paid for the book so he had enough to print 1,000 copies. He also had a special bookmarker which I know did not sell out autographed by Robert Jamieson.  They had to go back and forth from Australia but it was kinda cool having a special bookmarker to go along with the book.

His estate now owns the rights as far as I know to the Purdy library and whether the book gets reprinted or not is anyone's guess right now.  I would imagine after the estate settles it will be discussed among the heirs. Takes a lot of upfront cash to get books printed unless they are on demand. This was and is a beautiful book as Bob's books always were since he was in the typeset business early on.  The books were always laid out perfectly. Robert his son mostly always did the artwork for the covers.

It was a highly anticipated revision as lots of new material was added (I think about 80+ pages) and he worked on it for a few years through some tough times.  Very sad what happened.

Bob still has a FB page and you might want to post on there. Some of his relatives still read it and comment. But I haven't heard about anyone doing a 2nd printing yet.
