This Cavalier was my first online purchases back in the early Nineties. It is currently being used by my high school chess club. The board was fashioned from 3/4" plywood.

Actually, after some research I learned that my Cavalier set is a #1491 which is ivory/cream and black, as pictured in posts #7 & #33. The #1491 set is double-weighted and seems to be harder to find on the internet than the #1498.
See the photo of the Cavalier Set box in post #29 here...

Mike -
This is the incarnation of the Cavalier chess set that Shelby offers on his site (as pictured in his post #19 above). On his site, he calls it the Bobby Fischer set (why I don't know - to me, it just causes confusion), but it is in fact the Cavalier design, by virtue of the "Cavalier" style Knight.

Bought the same set from ACE a couple years back for only $14.95. He was calling it the Cavalier back then.
Yes, those vintage Cavalier pieces are really great ! I bought several sets of them on Ebay in both piece colors. At first, I liked the black/cream-white better, but I think the marble-white/brown match better with my vintage 1968 Drueke table.
ps: for a smaller size set, Ive always liked the 70's French 3M, which is what I learned to play on.
The closest that I know that still sells a similarly-sized chess table is HoS. Reasons for the broad and solid frame:
1. Leaning on the edge with your elbows, arms and even your upper body weight
2. Laying down a chess book for study
3. Laying down a laptop or tablet
4. Laying down a chess notebook for notating or for review
I wish the Drueke table was wider, as there is not much space to rest a book on, but its ok, can always put books, coffee mug, etc on a little sidetable if need be.
There is another vintage Drueke table on Ebay, probably from the 80's, but its listed for alot more than what I paid for my '68, so no buyers as of yet. If you're interested in a new table, I noticed this one that seems to be very good:

I picked up this set Tournament Version No. 1498 from eBay some time last year for around $35. My box is almost a Navy blue. I can't get to the set right now, but, as I remember it, the red piece tray is a "velveteen" finish. I just found this post by searching for "alabasque."
