Maybe the Millennium Chess Genius Exclusive Chess Computer  would be better for you being a dedicated chess computer rather than a electronic chess board which the Certabo board is?

Details here; https://www.chess.co.uk/millennium-chess-genius-exclusive-chess-computer/

Thanks for the suggestion.  I was not planning to buy any e-boards; just curious about its technology.  The questions I asked are the same ones I've faced and resolved when constructing my own e-boards.  I wanted to see how others resolve them and perhaps better, but doesn't seem to be the case here : (

I originally was aiming for a $3 +/- e-board for use at USCF tournaments to record games.  At this price, I hoped to equip the scholastic tournaments with free e-boards.

I just got my board last night. So far I'm liking it. I'll post more thoughts later.

I think interfacing picochess to this board would be a killer combo. They say their protocol is open. Implementing comm module shouldn't be to hard and then integrating it into picochess.

From their FAQ:

What does it mean that CERTABO® chessboards have open protocol?

This means that the information about positions, names of pieces and commands for the leds are available on the USB port in ASCII format and can be read by any software with serial interface. In other words it means that the board can be controlled by other hardware and software platform as you wish.

I know that they have approached a couple of software app developers like Chess for Android and Acid Ape Chess hoping that they will provide support to their Certabo boards, plus Chess.com and LiChess.

Yesterday they announced two new boards which can be found here, https://www.certabo.com

13-Dec. 2018 Certabo PC software version 2.5 release

New ulterio great improvements for Certabo PC software! The new 2.5 version has been released. With new release flipping side board option has been added to the rotated physical and virtual board. New "Use board status" option has been added. Now you can put pieces on the board and start from any position playing against human or engines select white or black, etc. very good for game analysis. Recognition algorithm has been further improved now you can play very fast between humans and you can even move to the same time. PGN file so you can have it drop in Certabo saved game directory, resume from software and then decide how to play human engine white black etc.

There's a lot of room for improvement in SW. Why the need for LCD/GUI interface when one can use electronic chess board for that. Same way as picochess. Engine and level selection. Why the need for "use board position" when one can simply start playing from a position that's set up...

Just suggestions...

It's been great - as robotvinnik said, it's been ridiculously easy to set up and start playing. I got the smaller board (i'm currently the only owner of a Certabo in Australia) and used some pieces from a folding chess bazaar set that fit very well. I cut the felt off the bottoms using a razor blade, sanded them lightly and stuck on the sensors. It all worked straight away. I now have a nice board and pieces at a price that isn't too outrageous.

I'll take some pics and post them soon.

The developer is very responsive to questions and so on, and called me personally from Italy to answer a question I had. You cant' beat that!

I'm really hoping that Certabo will be able to interface with Chess websites that are free. The DGT doesn't work on chess.com and if they haven't sorted that out by now, I don't think they have any intention of doing so. Maybe it will be different with Certabo but I fear that without some major inroads into the eboard market, they will have a battle on their hands to be heard. We can only hope.
