Chavet set?

@crocorrespondent, It's interesting to see how different the carving of the black and white Chavet knights from the same set are in this pic. The size of the eyes. The style of the mane. I have a modern Chavet No.5 (weighted and felted) coming in from France. But tracking shows it hasn't moved in a week. Is France shipping currently in lockdown???

Because of Christmas, the packages are probably late...

It's not Chavet because the thickness in red of the top of the tower is too low. The last Chavet store to sell is in Paris: https://www.variantes.com/152-pieces-jeu-echecs-classiques, but they are currently out of stock. You have to wait until January to be able to order Chavet again. The current Chavet quality is not as good as it used to be. There was a time when they were the reference but currently in France in the Jura, I recommend instead https://www.tournerie-roz.com/
Even if their notoriety is not as great as Chavet, the quality of their traditional manufacture is superior and over time, the chess clubs in France equip themselves at the Roz tournerie. At Roz, the game is made by hand. see the video below.
There is another problem in France independent of Chavet er Roz, it is the boxwood disease (moth).
The stock is sufficient in the short term but what will happen in the medium or long term?

Can you post a picture of your Chavet set so we can see what you think the rook's battlements should look like. Thanks.

That is the current production set, size 5. The vintage size 6 set, used in WC matches and major tournaments in the 1990s had a different design. See detailed pictures here https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/where-can-i-buy-a-chess-set-similar-to-the-one-used-in-lyons-1990?page=1

I have a Chavet from 1988 and the difference between the tower on the left (1988) and the one on the right (2019) is not as big as the one in your photo. Is your Chavet really an original? I bought the 1988 one at the "Le damier de l'opéra". This is a store specializing in chess games and so I am certain of the authenticity of the game.

The rooks you show are from size 5 or 4 sets. The size 6 vintage set was a different design. Please look at the photos in the thread I referenced. Many of these vintage sets are accompanied by "Chavet" or "Henri Chavet" boxes clearly labelled.

I ve also been in " Opera" store in Paris two years ago. To make the long story short, your photos are No 5 or No 4 and modern Chavet. Mine is vintage Chavet#6.

Indeed, it is size 5. I did not imagine that the parts were different in size 6. Thank you for this clarification. Currently, I prefer the "Roz tournerie". The quality is superior to Chavet. Chavet was bought by another entrepreneur for several years... As for the "Roz turnery" plant, the couple who own the turning plant want to retire this year. Unless the turnery has a serious buyer, I'm afraid this will be the beginning of the end for the traditional manufacture of chess sets in France.

Hi every one!

I bought few days ago on a second hand website a chess set (size 4) and I don't know if it could be a Chavet set or not.

So that's why I will be grateful to the experts and collectors of this forum to give me their point of view.
Thanking you in advance for your help

Here's a vintage one for sale on eBay. What do you think?

Here's another saying vintage as well. Why the huge price difference?

It's the size difference. That B207a is 82mm KH and B200 is around 61mm KH. The B207a is also weighted plus the box added some value over a slide top box. It looks indeed pristine.

MCH818

Great minds think alike. I saw both as well. The B207a is more desirable thus a higher price. I am not a Chavet expert. I think the B207A is a nice one, and no one has placed a bid on it yet. The king height is 82 mm so it is an older version. The newer ones are 84+ mm. The box also shows Henri Chavet on it which means it is older as well. The box looks to be from the 80s-90s. The new boxes have Chavet chess on it. The only problem is the box has water damage which is a drawback. However, the pieces appear to be in good condition which is more important.

I don't know as much about the B200s. These are very small. I don't know the king height for a B200. The pieces are unweighted and unfelted. The box is a newer model of the vintage B200s. The label on the box is for older sets even though it states Chavet Chess on it. That's all I know. Maybe a Chavet expert can clarify both sets for us.

I didn't realize you posted before I did.

Yeah I saw you typing so I kept mine short happy.png

Brilliant. Thanks for all that information. I do like the first one. Pity I haven't got £150! Didn't notice the water damage on box.

I think I need to invest in a little notebook to write information down to take with me once I resume my bargain hunting 🙂.

TheOneCalledMichael

Oeeh I love bargain hunting! I usually make a copy of mister MCH818 notes once every 3 weeks to keep me updated.
