Knights are different too
The eye placement mainly. The both have longer noses than the current #6 set. The #6 set I have doesn't have eyes lol. OR mane lines down their backs. They look unfinished.

Yes it is. I don't understand it. I have spoken to three makers about a re-issue of these pieces over the last year and they all say "there is no market". You have two former World Champions and a VERY nice chess set. No Market ... really?
We worked with NOJ to reproduce the Tal '61 USSR Championship set from a handful of pictures. You basically need pictures that enable you to make front, side, and in the case of knights, rear elevations. Proportions are not so hard to determine as even as simple a tool as Microsoft Paint allows you to calculate proportions from a pixel coordinate grid. It's a lot of work, going from drawing to blank to adjustment again and again and again, but it can, and has, been done.

@Ronbo710, I suspect that most manufacturers would look at this set and view it as a low to mid-price set, not the $300+ set that the last FIDE set cost at point of purchase. I understand that one is currently sold out, so perhaps another set is in the works.
The French chess sets have always been quite inexpensive compared to others, since most of them did not use ebony or other rare woods for the black pieces, and the forms were quite simple. Given that the market is inundated with inexpensive sets from the far east, and that the current market, profit-wise, is driven by both cheap plastic and artistic wooden sets, another middle of the road set would not necessarily motivate manufacturers to produce one. Did you try Chessbazaar?
I happen to love the looks of the classic Chavets. I need one for my collection, if I can ever find one that's 4". I find I prefer 4" to 4.4" sets for over the board play.
I would love a classic Chavet, too! If NOJ could reproduce one, my wallet is ready
I like French chess sets. The knights look really cool especially the snout and the pointy ears.

Do you think Chavet could pursue legal action seeing as how it differs from their latest designs? As long as their name was not used I think that shape would be public domain now. Also the knights would have to be spot on for me. No stubby nosed critters like in the DGT line up.
Here's a GREAT bunch of games showing the Chavet set from the Intel Grand Prix

I have no idea what Chavet might do. IP is not my field, and certainly not EU IP law. Moreover, I don't offer legal opinions or advice here. That said, I wouldn't market a Chavet reproduction without speaking with someone who practices in this field. Nor would I rely on assertions that the design "is in the public domain," or that use of the brand name is determinative, made here by people, with all due respect, perhaps not qualified to judge.
Yeah legal advice advice should be left for specialists indeed. However i can imagine a chessbazaar making a Chavet replica and actually selling it ... and good luck with trying to sue them. That would look pretty cool in Ebony if you ask me.
great find.
Thank You Sir
. I am still hunting for the other set like Frank's as well.
This is Karpov, giving simul in 2014!! Look at the chess pieces. Looks like "Grail" to me??!!
Are these Chavet nr 5 sets?
Just ordered (again) a weighted and felted Chavet nr. 5 set at: http://www.variantes.com/pieces-jeu-echecs-classiques/1756-pieces-d-echecs-chavet-plombees-feutrees-n5-01215.html
and a similar board at: https://www.schachversand.de/startneue2.htm
All for less then 100€ (shipping included)

I'll post some pictures next WE.
Very Nice
. The Queen looks to be the flatter top design but the King has the wider cross. I'm expecting a modern number 6 any day now with felt/weights (tetes fines).
I took a few pics of the knights from this vintage Chavet set. I can't get enough of the angles on the vintage Chavet knights
. I was gong to see if Andy can make me another set of these. One has a hairline crack in the back.

Thanks
. My guess would be mid 90's. I have noticed this set also has much taller bishops (in relation to the knights) than the other vintage Chavet sets. Here are the knight and bishop of my set and the other vintage Chavet set of Arlindo (one I am still looking for
)

There's a definite lineage there in the lines of the bishops and knights. But my set reminds me of my Drueke #38 with the 5" King. With respect to Drueke's other sets of the period. Like an over the top Luxury version they knew would not stay in their line up too long.
The set I recently bought is from the early 90's I believe. The only thing different from the pics above are the King and Queen. It almost looks like a transitional set with the sphere on top of the Queen and the fatter cross on the King. Both do nothing for me. I like the thinner cross King and flatter top Queen.
