Lovely knights! I wonder what is the issue year of your vintage knights?!

Thanks Laughing. My guess would be mid 90's. I have noticed this set also has much taller bishops (in relation to the knights) than the other vintage Chavet sets. Here are the knight and bishop of my set and the other vintage Chavet set of Arlindo (one I am still looking for Wink)

You are right. Completely different carving and elements in every piece..? Chavet mystery

There's a definite lineage there in the lines of the bishops and knights. But my set reminds me of my Drueke #38 with the 5" King. With respect to Drueke's other sets of the period. Like an over the top Luxury version they knew would not stay in their line up too long.

Thx. Tried to combine the set with different boards but I think that the combination with the walnut board rules. This WE I'll start a post about matching sets with boards.

First, I see your Cavalier set, now this. You taste in knights is impeccable in my opinion. I'm completely jealous. How do you find such great sets? That may have been a stupid question. Looking for 20 years I suppose. Do you have people searching for sets for you?

Thanks for asking. I had a contact in Europe for the other Chavet set with ebony stained pieces. But this set I found on  the auction site * bay. Imagine my surprise when watching youtube one night seeing  that the set here with the 4" plus Kings  was the same set used in the Kasparov - Kramnik 2000 WCC match happy.png . I'm sure if the seller knew this and listed it as such it would have gone even higher. Here's a great shot of the King and Queen in this video at 1:02:30  and even Gaza's AP Royal Oak chronograph in the background lol ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPpI5Nz6iiw

Ronbo that find was amazing! I can buy a nice looking #5 right now (photo to follow) but I usually don't like sets with bishops under 3" and pawns under 2" and I'm not sure how tall they will be.

The king is 3.5" x 1.4". What do yo think?

Sorry for necroing this thread but I believe this is probably the best place to ask about my recent purchase as it might be similar if not the same set Rondo710 got a few years back. This way we keep all related info under a single place. I'd also like to take this chance to introduce myself as this is my first message on the forum so hi all from a Spaniard in Japan. I'm more of a board gamer but used to play chess when I was a kid. Don't get me wrong, I consider Chess to be The Board game but you know what I mean. 30 years has past and now with 2 girls (10 and 5) I decided to introduce them to the wonderful and exciting World of Chess! happy.png Having the perfect chance to buy a set, I decided to give it a go and look around to see what was available on the market. After many searches on the net, I always ended up spending most of the time admiring Rondo710's Chavet sets so I decided to look for one here in Tokyo. After several months looking, I bought what I think is a mid 90's set #4 with a tad small board. Good enough to teach my kids. I knew getting an old #6 would be almost impossible but I continued searching for larger size sets from Chavet. That's when last week I found a very skint and vague "buy it now" auction on eBay with not very descriptive pictures and no info on the size. Another of those small sized sets we see very often on auctions, I thought. Since the box despite some damage and dirt was kinda nice (one of those 90's I think with a cool logo on the corner) I went ahead and asked the seller for the King's size. He sent me several pictures comparing the King with a pawn but no exact measures as I asked. Several more messages (the auction at that time was getting a warning with many views per hour) and he finally told me the King was 4,4cm tall... bummer. I'm not an expert but I told him that such size for a Chavet King was unusual or just plain impossible since the smallest #0 and #1 were just 60mm. At that time I was extremely nervous because the auction could finish any second but I didn't want to risk it as I didn't know the size. A few minutes later finally came the answer, a picture of the King with a ruler on the side... 4,4"!! surprise.png That's 112mm tall! I thought the largest set was #8 (102mm) but I also remembered Rondo710 commenting something about a jumbo size one so without much time to waist I went ahead and bought it.

Now, the 4" plus Kings set still hasn't arrived and all my guessing is from the pictures the seller was able to send me. There are I think a few differences between the pics Rondo710 posted and the one I got that I'd like to point out. The Kings have different hair lines that I have never seen in any of the pictures posted in this forum. When you see the pictures you will understand. As if the lines are random and with different length. I'm not even sure if the white and black Knights from my set are the same on the hair area... it might be a lighting effect from the pictures though. I did a little more research and found a similar Chavet set that had closer Knights to the set I bought. Funny enough, on another eBay auction that ended just a few days before this one. Maybe some of you already saw it, the one that ended up selling for 1,200 pounds. The rest of the pieces are different as that set is very old, according to the seller from the 40's or 50's. but who knows.

The box as you can see has a little damage near the logo and some darker area in the lower area maybe due to moister. The sticker that usually provides information is empty so that's another reason why I'm a little clueless as to what set this one belongs to. Rondo701's has a Ref. B-212 but not sure if this can be consider the same. Another difference yet, is the box size. I don't have the measurements but if you count the darker squares from one of the corners from bottom (without the top cover,) there are 8 on Rondo710's and 9 on mine (see picture with black King and Pawn.)

So according to your knowledge and wisdom, what set does this belong to?

Bigger is not always better and the overall condition is not the best but considering the low price I paid, I think I got a pretty good deal and will be in my collection for many years.

Here you can see the hair area from the Knights I was talking about.

You can count the dark squares from the box corner and compare it to the B-212

I'm glad I saw this thread and  l again learned a few more stuff about this much-talk-about Chavet  set. I'd like to learn more about the subtle differences between the modern and vintage sets.  I would appreciate much if anyone have more information and/or pictures to share.
