Hos Lasker set that's like a work of art.

Chess Board / Pieces as Art
My recent purchase at thechesstore was pretty terrible, first they sell me this set that on the webpage looked like black ebony and when it arrives its grey and very dull. After returning this set and asking for another stained boxwood set they sent me a set with a broken pawn and lots of defects.
They did sell me a stunning board though with only a slight problem for a very good price.
Here's one of the most beautiful sets ever, the replica of the elusive "Dubrovnik" from 1950 in deep red. Note the unusually elegant trademark knight.

I saved up a while for this set:

I got the version with ebony pieces for the black. (It's one of three sets I purchased on eBay from chessbazaar.) There were problems with a few pieces, but the vendor is very good about sending replacements. I'm thrilled with the set.
The knights are absolutely beautiful. I love the "onion dome" bishops, and the striking offset crown ot the queens. The unusual head of the kings took a couple of minutes to get used to, but they quickly grew on me. Really, only the rooks seem odd, though not entirely out of place. I do, however, prefer a more massive, masculine rook. I still love the set, and it's a joy to use.

My current desktop background. Image is of a HoS Zagreb set. Love the clean lines. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not the biggest fan of really ornate knights.

Many of my favorite sets do not have "ornate" knights, though I do appreciate a nicely carved knight. What makes or breaks a set for me is the overall design -- the lines, proportions, the overall impression. We may agree or disagree on the style of a given set, but I certainly unbderstand the appreciation of chess sets as art. Whatever works for the individual is certainly understandable, whether or not my taste agrees with that individual.
One cannot deny the aesthetic pleasure of playing with a set that appeals to the eye, and feels good in the hand.

I have a HOS Lasker set that's near perfect and they fixed a problem with great class and service.
