I am relatively new to chess, and most definately a novice and I'm really wanting to improve my game. I knew a couple opening moves that have proven pretty effective but my consistancy and end game SUCK. I am looking for a book that won't be so chess-heady that I won't follow...I want to be able to really get something out of it. Reccomendations??

I recommend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess".  Trust me...it is one of the finest beginning books on chess.

Also, "How to Beat your Dad at Chess" is another great beginner book that helps you understand strategies for checkmate.

Good luck.
