I would highly recommend Pandolfini's Ultimate Guide to Chess and Pandolfini's Endgame Course: Basic Endgame Concepts Explained by America's Leading Chess Teacher.
Both give a great introduction into improving and studying chess.
Irving Chernev's Logical Chess is available in algebraic notation. There is also Neil McDonalds Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking, which is a more modern take on the same idea.
