Hola,

I am a beginner, in the sense that I've known how to play for most of my life, but have never done any sort of study.  I know the basic mechanics of the game, but almost nothing about strategy.  I would like to pick a good introductory book, or two.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

I would recommend Winning Chess Strategies by Yasser Seirawan as a simple, not overwhelming, well written and enjoyable introduction to chess strategy.

There's more to chess than strategy though. You've got 3 subjects to cover at the minimum: tactics, middlegame/strategy, endgame. So try these to cover all your bases:
Understanding Chess Tactics by Martin Weteschnik
Silman's Complete Endgame Course by Jeremy Silman

The best sort of books for someone like you are ones that teach chess in a systematic and structured way like Laskers Manual by Emmanual Lasker or the Game of Chess by Siegbert Tarrasch once you have a solid foundation in the basics and the fundamentals for life you're eyes will be opened and you'll see chess as a harmonious unit that has spiritual beauty the way all of it's parts are linked together as to embue the whole with one meaning as Lasker said.
